Meet Rocky Ryan

Rocky Ryan spots for Johnny and the #23 BDR team when the Nextel Cup teams race in conjunction with the Craftsman Truck Series.  Rocky is very busy on race weekend as he also spots for #31 Jeff Burton Nextel Cup Team and the #29 Jeff Burton / Scott Wimmer RCR team.

On a personal note:  It's hard for me to catch up with Rocky on the race weekends I attend because he is always in the spotter's stand during all the practice sessions.  We appreciate your eyes in the sky!   Thank you, Rocky for sharing your thoughts with us!  Barb

Why do you work on a NASCAR team?    So that I get to see the races for free? Seriously, I left a career in the music business for racing, and have not regretted it one bit. The challenge, the rush, the uncertainty, the competition,  are all major reasons why I'm in racing. The hours are long, the travel is unbearable sometimes, and being away from home for such a large part of the year make it really, really tough. But in my case, when I put on that headset before every race, as well as every practice, and know that the driver on the other end is willing to put his trust in me, then there's no place I'd rather be. It's an incredible feeling.

What has been your most rewarding moment in your racing career?   Professionally, there are many. But probably the one that stands out the most is winning the 2002 Daytona 500 with Ward Burton. It's the only time I've EVER screamed on the radio. But winning this years Busch Owners Championship with Jeff Burton and Scott Wimmer might rival that, check back with me after the celebration.   I just hope one day to be having the same celebration with Johnny and the rest of the Toyota Certified Used Vehicles Tundra team!

What has been the most challenging moment in your racing career?  There are so many challenges in our sport, and each one can seem like the most challenging one at the time. But I think the one that has stood out with me was when Dale Earnhardt died. I was spotting for Stacy Compton, and when Dale crashed, it vaulted us from 12th to 10th, which was Stacy's ONLY top 10 of his cup career. We were all so happy for Stacy, yet when I saw the accident, I knew it wasn't good. When we received the news, all I could think about was Dale's spotter and what he must be going through. It was in no way his fault, but all spotters are alike. We know we can't prevent the inevitable from happening, but we like to think that we can alter it. I don't know how I would react if I were ever in that situation. I was there when Kenny Irwin and Adam Petty died also, and Tony Roper was a good friend of mine. To put myself in the shoes of their spotters, is absolutely gut wrenching. But we go on, because it's what we do.

What would you like the fans to know about you?  Well, there was this one time, in band camp........sorry everyone, I just couldn't resist.      I'm not sure that the fans really want to know anything about me, but I did get married this year, and I couldn't be happier. Jeff Burton once told me that a career is just that, a career, and careers come to an end. But family is family, and that's forever. I love winning, and want to win at everything I do. I love my motorcycles, hard rock music, Christmas (yeah,  I know, I'm still a kid at heart), any sport at all, and getting away when the schedule allows it. I love spending time with my best friend, my wife.

What would you like to say to the JB fans?  I'd really like to say 3 things to all of the JB fans out there. I have worked with many drivers over the years, some for just one race, and some for many, many races. And I can't think of a driver I've enjoyed working with more than Johnny. You have to have a special relationship between a driver and spotter. You can work with someone and never know anything about them, but you are a professional, and you can trust each other on a professional level. But, if you can build on that professional relationship, and become friends, then the bond is that much stronger. Johnny and I laugh, tell stories, and I truly consider him a friend. I think it helps us both on the track. I know him well enough to have a good feeling on what helps him, and what hurts him, what frustrates him, and what can relax him, and that's very important. I hope that as long as Johnny Benson chooses to race, that he will want me to be a part of it.

Going back to the first question, we race because we love it. It's so hard to have to leave love ones behind on a weekly basis, but we know it's what we have to do. They say that we are "living the dream", and that's true, we are. But remember this, when you go to sleep at night, you hope you have good dreams, but they can also be nightmares. Not every moment is "the dream." But we know that and accept that. It's so rare that you can do something in life that you truly love, and if you ever get that opportunity,  you can let it escape you. You have to make sacrifices, and you hope that your love ones can make them as well, in order to support you.

And finally, a huge thank you, to all of you JB fans. If it weren't for fans like you guys, we wouldn't be here. YOU guys are the reason we are here. Your passion and enthusiasm for the sport, and for our driver, allows us to follow "our dreams." Being a Johnny Benson fan tells me something about all of you. It tells me that you believe in the good guy. You are sincere. You are intense yet jovial, honest and hard working. You believe in doing the job right, and not so much about "status." And you would rather help another, instead of taking advantage of another's helplessness.

WE are as much fans of YOU, as you are of us!

And any other information that you would like to share with the fans ...  Sure, but Barb thinks I talk too much, and only limited me to 250 words or less, and I think I've already gone over!
