Benson Starts
36th at Chicagoland
#10 Valvoline Pontiac driver Johnny Benson didn't like his
qualifying run Friday at Chicagoland Speedway, but he thinks
it will race a lot better on Sunday.
"We are disappointed," Benson said. "We didn't practice as
well as we wanted so we aren't totally surprised with our
starting spot."
He qualified third of the 44 cars and just after a severe
thunderstorm delayed qualifying. Benson wouldn't blame the
green track for his lap and insists he is optimistic.
"I think this car is going to race good. We say that a lot,
but these days racing is a lot different than qualifying and
we think we have a car to race here."
Benson will start 36th on Sunday.
He missed this race last year because of injuries. in 2001
Benson qualified 34th and was running with the leaders
before mechanical problems dropped him down a lap near the
end of the race.
"We have been good here before and the guys were good here
last year with Mike Wallace. This is my second time here and
it's taken some time to get used to this place. But this is
a place that if you are right you will go to the front
pretty quickly."
Sunday's race begins at 3 p.m. EST on NBC.
