Benson 22nd
in Daytona Qualifying
Johnny Benson and the #10 Valvoline Pontiac team used a
little bit of team racing Thursday night to qualify 22nd for
Saturday's 400-mile race in Daytona.
In qualifying, Benson used the car Jerry Nadeau raced at the
Daytona 500 in February.
"Our team built that car during the off season and we let
the #01 team race it here in February. Jerry ran pretty well
in the race," Benson said. "We thought about bringing a new
car but this car had some history so we decided to race it.
The #01 worked on it, tested it and made it better so we are
pretty thankful for those guys."
Mike Wallace, who replaced Nadeau after he was injured at
Richmond in May, will drive the car the car the #01 team
raced in Talladega. Wallace will start 23rd Saturday night.
"It's a group effort and I hope it shows for both of us
Saturday night," Benson said. "I think we will be OK. You
just hope to get your car right and hope you have a lot of
luck. Maybe Mike and I can draft up to the front together."
Benson wasn't the only team story Thursday night.
Steve Park won the pole in the car that Jeff Green used to
claim the Daytona 500 pole. Green and Park have since
switched rides with Park taking over the Richard Childress
Racing entry. Kevin Harvick, another RCR car, qualified
second.
