Benson 16th at Phoenix

It didn’t have the drama or excitement of last week’s first career victory at
Rockingham, but Sunday’s 16th place finish at Phoenix International Raceway
turned into a respectable showing for Johnny Benson and his teammates who
battled traffic all afternoon with their #10 Valvoline Pontiac.

"We were decent today," Benson said after the race. "But we were in traffic all
day and this place is just so tough to pass on. Track position was everything
today. You could be faster than the guy in front of you but it was real hard to
get by him unless you were a lot quicker."

Benson started the race in 23rd position and lost a few spots in the opening
laps when he made contact with another car damaging his left front fender. The
James Ince led crew repaired the damage and Benson spent the middle portions of the race climbing up through traffic on the flat mile.

Benson moved as high as 14th but never lower than 18th in a race that included
a great deal of single file racing.

"We were kind of on top of the track and couldn’t get the handling right," said
Benson who led a lap under yellow during a pit stop sequence late in the race.
"We got good pit stops and everybody did everything they could do today."

Benson ended the race in 16th about a half lap behind race winner Matt Kenseth. Rusty Wallace finished second and Jeff Gordon third.

Benson said Sunday’s race capped a fun weekend.

"It was nice this weekend. Everyone stopped by and congratulated us on the win at Rockingham," he said. "We are all ready to run like that again. We didn’t
today but maybe we can at Homestead next Sunday."
