Rain Puts
Benson 25th at Talladega
#10 Valvoline Pontiac driver Johnny Benson sure didn't want
to see the rain that fell late Friday afternoon at Talladega
Superspeedway just minutes before Nascar Winston Cup
qualifying was scheduled to begin.
Benson posted the fourth quickest time in three hours of
practice on Friday morning and appeared to be one of the
favorite's for the pole.
"Yeah we are disappointed," Benson said. "I mean it won't
hurt us too much for the race but our guys have been working
so hard on the superspeedway program and today they gave me
a pretty awesome car. I think we have a real shot at the
pole but I guess we will never know. If we can be as good on
Sunday as we were today then Sunday will be a pretty good
time."
Benson will start 25th based on car owner points used to
determine the lineup because of the rain.
"That isn't too bad but the key here Sunday will be
survival," Benson said. "I don't care where I am most of the
race but when it gets down to the end I expect we will be up
front."
Jimmie Johnson and Mark Martin will lead the field to the
green at 1:30 p.m. (Eastern) on Sunday. NBC will televise
the race.
Benson and his teammates will practice in two 45-minute
sessions Saturday morning before the ARCA race. Benson plans
to spot for ARCA rookie Michael Vergers during the race
Saturday.
"I'm just helping Michael out," Benson said. "It's no big
deal. Michael is a good guy and this gives me something to
do Saturday afternoon."
