Benson Second At New Hampshire

Enough with the broken ribs, wrecks and bad luck in 2002. Johnny Benson and his #10 Valvoline Pontiac teammates are ready to turn their season around.

They took their first step toward that goal Friday at New Hampshire
International Speedway where Benson practiced fourth and qualified second to
Ryan Newman.

"That's big for us," said Benson who made his run in sunshine while others
benefited from shade. "We have come here and practiced well before and didn't
back it up in qualifying. Today we more than backed it up and that's a credit to the guys on this Valvoline team. I mean the work they do and the time the spend on these cars day in and day out is unbelievable."

It was Benson's best qualifying run of the season and nearly equaled poles he
earned at Atlanta in March 1996 and Michigan in August 1997.

"It was pretty scary there for a while. I didn't think we got that good of lap and then I looked at the scoring pylon coming down the front stretch and saw we were at the top and thought that couldn't be too bad," Benson said. "I figured
Ryan would be the car to get us and he did. But we are happy. I have no
complaints."

Benson's second-place run is more remarkable because this is his first
appearance at NHIS this season. In July he missed the race because of broken
ribs he suffered at Daytona.

"Yeah I really wish I could have raced here now, but Jerry did us a good job and we have this weekend," Benson said. "I think we will be pretty good on Sunday. It's going to be interesting. This place always is."

NBC will televise Sunday's race at 1 p.m.
