Benson Enjoys Coaching Danica;
But Yearns to Race
By: MaryJo Buchanan
After the
2009 accident in a Super Modified that left
him in serious condition, as well as bruised
and battered, Johnny Benson has fully
recuperated and simply cannot hide how much he
is itching to get back behind the wheel of a
race car or truck.
“Physically I’m feeling great,” Benson
said. “We obviously had a little
accident a little while awhile ago but
I’m really good on that end and
enjoying my time at the moment,
working in my shop and building and
selling race cars, the Outlaw Late
Model stuff. I’m staying busy
but not busy enough.”
While he continues to pursue a ride,
the former NASCAR Nationwide and Truck
Series champ is keeping busy coaching
one of the sport’s most visible up and
comers, Danica Patrick. Benson was
tapped by Patrick’s crew chief Tony
Eury Jr. to assist her in her
development in the No. 7 GoDaddy.com
Nationwide ride for JR Motorsports.
“I
have been helping Danica a little
bit,” Benson said. “Tony Eury Jr.
called me and wondered if I’d come
give a hand. He was trying to be both
coach and crew chief and as we talked
he really wanted to focus on the race
car. I’ve always admired the
work he’s done and because he called
is why I did it,” Benson continued.
“That’s why I’m there.”
“They have a great race team and I’m
impressed with how they work and their
rapport,” Benson said. “It’s a good
group of guys and that on my end is
pretty cool to see. And to work with
Danica is a pretty neat deal,” Benson
continued. “Hopefully we are giving
her the advice and help she needs.
It’s been working out great,” Benson
said. “Danica’s doing a great job and
we’re just helping her out in the
areas she needs for stock car racing.”
Benson is no stranger to the coaching
and mentoring role. Last year, he
worked with Trevor Bayne, the 20 year
old that this year won NASCAR’s most
prestigious event, the Daytona 500.
What
is the secret to Benson’s mentoring
success, with both Bayne and now
Danica Patrick? “I can’t tell
you everything I’m telling her,”
Benson said playfully. “I think a
whole lot of it is just trying to get
her acclimated with the stock cars.
They are very different than the Indy
cars,” Benson continued. “Some of the
things that I see from Indy car
drivers coming to the stock cars is
that they do not like loose race cars.
And unfortunately you have to be able
to do some of that. Going fast
for her is not a huge issue,” Benson
said. “But getting the car to go
faster in practice and faster yet in
the race has been a bit more
challenging for her.”
Benson is working with Patrick to as
to the feel of the race car, as well
as not being such a perfectionist
during practice. He also has been
coaching her on different lines around
the race track. “She’s got a
good feel of the car,” Benson said.
“I’ve been impressed with that. It’s
just a matter of trying to narrow that
down from practice to the race.
She wants it perfect for practice and
every driver does, Benson continued.
“But I’m trying to show her what’s
going to be good for the race.”
“Practice doesn’t do anything but give
her track time,” Benson said. “But
when we’re good in practice, we may
not be good in the race and she’s
understanding that now. I’m
changing her line on the track and
where she needs to run,” Benson said.
“That’s something that every driver
tries to accomplish from practice into
the race. It’s just helping her close
those gaps.”
After mentoring Patrick to a fourth
place finish at Las Vegas, the highest
ever for a female in NASCAR history,
Benson set his sights to guiding her
around Bristol Motor Speedway this
past weekend. “She ran a great
race,” Benson said, in spite of
Patrick’s on-track incident with Ryan
Truex leading to a 29th place finish
and a totally wrecked race car. “We
wanted to run as many laps as possible
and stay out of trouble. She ran
good, she was passing cars and she did
well there,” Benson continued. “She
had an unfortunate incident late in
the race but it was just a racing
deal.”
“She
was frustrated but it happens so fast
there that it’s just one of those
scenarios,” Benson said. “You chalk
that up to experience and move
forward. It’s too bad she’s not racing
this weekend rather than waiting a
month or two to get back in again.”
Because of her IndyCar schedule,
Benson will also now go on hiatus as
far as coaching Ms. Patrick.
“The three race deal was strictly
because she’s going back to do the
Indy stuff right now,” Benson said.
“She needs to concentrate on it
because that’s her main job. “At
this time I was just going to help her
out until that time comes,” Benson
continued. “Hopefully I can help her
some more. There’s some areas that we
can still work on.”
“Hopefully, I will get that
opportunity…if I’m not doing
anything.”
“I’m
still looking for a ride,” Benson
said. “I’d love to be able to go run
for a championship in the Truck Series
but obviously we can’t do that this
year. But yeah, I’m still looking for
a ride with someone that can run a
bunch of races. It’s obviously
going pretty slow, but I’m still
hopeful.”
What
Benson misses most is simple. He
desperately wants to compete again.
“I miss the competition,” Benson said.
“I’ve always built race cars from the
ground up and that’s what I like.
I like building new cars and going out
and proving them on the track,” Benson
continued. “That’s what I enjoy the
most. And of course racing at the
NASCAR level, that’s the biggest part
of what I enjoy.”
“I
really want to run the Truck Series,”
Benson said. “That would be in my mind
the best case scenario. I would
run for a Nationwide championship,”
Benson continued. “As far as the Cup
stuff, I don’t really see many
opportunities there and I don’t
necessarily believe in the ‘start and
park’ deal, so I don’t know that I’d
venture down that road.”
“But
if it comes down where I can’t run for
a championship in the Truck or
Nationwide Series, my next one I’d
like to run for a championship is in
the Super Modifieds. I’ve got an
Outlaw Late Model Championship, an ASA
Championship, a Nationwide
Championship and a Truck Series
Championship,” Benson said. “So, I’d
like to get one in another series. I
think that’d be really cool.”
“I
don’t have that many years in the
NASCAR side, but I’ve got a lot of
racing left in me that’s for sure,”
Benson said. “And I’ve got a couple of
championships left in me. That’s also
for sure.”

New 'World' Record at
Bristol
Jason Blonde was the fastest of
the fast Saturday afternoon at Bristol Motor
Speedway as he established a new world record
during the World's Fastest Half-Mile Speed
Trials. Blonde, driving an Xtreme Sprint
Series sprint car, clicked off a blistering
lap of 144.871 mph in 13.245 seconds,
shattering the previous track record of
138.442 mph in 13.860 seconds set by Sammy
Swindell in June of 2000 at BMS during a World
of Outlaws event. The 36-year-old Blonde, a
veteran sprint car racer with more than 50
feature wins on both dirt and pavement, tagged
the wall earlier in the afternoon, but was
totally unfazed.
Mike Lichty set a new half-mile
Supermodified world record with a lap of
144.634 mph in 13.267 seconds. Sprint Cup
driver David Ragan piloted his Ford Mustang GT
5.0 to a lap of 98.497 mph at 19.481 seconds,
a world record for a passenger car. Scott
Russell and his Yamaha took on the World's
Fastest Half-Mile and set a half-mile closed
course record for a Superbike with a run of
97.990 mph, which he covered in 19.582
seconds. Others participating in the World's
Fastest Half-Mile Speed Trials were USAC
Sprint Car driver Bryan Clauson and ISMA
Supermodified driver Brad Noffsinger.
Congratulations, Mike!
Busch
wins at Bristol
#18-Kyle Busch won
the Scotts EZ Seed 300 at Bristol Motor
Speedway. He put on another dominating
performance, leading 268 laps on the day to
take his 45th career series win and his 2nd of
the year. He also passed 10000 laps led in his
Nationwide career. #38-Kasey Kahne finished
second, followed by #5-Dale Earnhardt, Jr.,
#2-Elliott Sadler, #20-Joey Logano, #33-Kevin
Harvick, #60-Carl Edwards, #30-Jason Leffler,
#22-Brad Keselowski, and #88-Aric Almirola.
There were 8 cautions for 46 laps and 4 lead
changes among 4 leaders. The estimated
attendance was 80,000. Danica Patrick
finished 33rd after an accident on lap 245.

Danica Patrick latest to Benefit from
Mentorship of Johnny Benson
One has to
wonder what Johnny Benson Jr. is telling these
drivers who hire him as a mentor.
Benson
worked with Trevor Bayne last summer in the
NASCAR Nationwide Series, and Bayne went on to
win the Daytona 500 in February.
And now
Danica Patrick hired Benson to
work with her on a three-race basis, and
on Saturday, she made NASCAR history in the
Nationwide race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
Veteran Mark
Martin won the race, but Patrick’s
fourth-place finish was the highest finish for
a female driver in the history of any of
NASCAR’s three major circuits, including
Sprint Cup and Camping World Trucks. Benson
joined Patrick in the Feb. 26 race in Phoenix,
in which she finished 17th. He also will work
with her at Bristol on March 19.
Patrick
skyrocketed to fame in 2004 by finishing
fourth in the Indianapolis 500, and she took
third in 2009. Patrick will run a complete
IndyCar schedule this season, beginning with
the March 27 Honda Grand Prix of St.
Petersburg, and IndyCar remains her priority.
She will run a limited Nationwide schedule.
Benson
continues to search for a full-time ride in
the Trucks division. But in the meantime,
teams would be wise to consult Benson for
advice.
It’s no
surprise that Benson does well in this
position. He has run in all three series, and
he won championships in Nationwide in 1995 and
Trucks in 2008. But it’s not just the
knowledge that Benson brings to the garage.
It’s his professionalism and the respect he
has from other drivers.
Benson
explained to the Press in February that his
role as a mentor includes helping drivers
acclimate themselves with the cars, and he
works with them to improve communication with
their crew chief. He also provides advice on
race management and what they can expect from
the start of practice, through qualifying, to
the end of the race.
Whatever
advice he is giving them, it is working.

Q & A
with Johnny
03/02/11 - ESPN.com |
|
Johnny, what did you think of the race
yesterday?
I thought the race at the end was pretty
cool to see Jeff Gordon and Kyle Busch. Kyle
had a great weekend. It just shows you how
good Gordon was yesterday.
How big of a win was that for Jeff?
Jeff is a four time champion and he can
win a race at any time. I think it's a
little more surprising that he hasn't won
one. It was just a great job for him all
day. The team has the talent. He has the
talent. It was well deserved and a long time
coming. People forget that even though it's
been something like 66 races since he won,
he's had 6, 7, 8, 10 second place finishes.
He's always been right there.
Hey Johnny! I was wondering they say
Darlington is to tough to tame can you tell
me why this is and what makes this track so
difficult compared to say a Phoenix or
Richmond?
Darlington is tough. It's fast. Each end
is very different from each other. Turn 2
coming down the hill, to me, is a bit messed
up. But in general, the track has been hard
because the asphalt has been worn out and
you slip and slide a lot. With the new
asphalt it's become easier, but still
challenging.

Eury Jr. Says Danica is
Having Fun This Year
By: Bob Pockrass -
Scene Daily
Crew chief Tony Eury Jr. is
working with a different Danica Patrick this
year. She’s still the same IndyCar
Series star and still has a lot to learn about
stock-car racing considering she had only 13
Nationwide Series starts for JR Motorsports a
year ago.
But this
year Patrick, who scored her first top-five
finish in NASCAR last week at Las Vegas, at
least has an idea of what to expect as the
races unfold and about how the car changes
throughout a fuel run. She has a new driving
coach in Johnny Benson. And maybe just as
important, she’s having fun as she improves.
“Running
better always makes you more positive about
what you’re doing and you have more confidence
that you belong here and can run with these
guys,” said Eury Jr., her crew chief and
co-owner at JR Motorsports. “Running good is
definitely nothing but pumping her up. We
needed that good run. We’re getting
ready to go to Bristol, which is one of the
toughest places on the circuit, and she’s
never seen the place.”
What Patrick
does at Bristol won’t take away from what she
did in her last race – a fourth-place finish
that made her the highest finishing woman ever
in a NASCAR national stock-car touring series
event. “I never want to use [my NASCAR
inexperience] as an excuse, but I have to use
it to keep my own expectations in check
because I get mad when I don’t do well,”
Patrick said. “That’s what I’m here to do.
“When I get
mad, I don’t perform as well, I’m not in as
good of a mood and I’m not as friendly to
people. … This isn’t my second year, my 40th
race – this is my 16th [stock-car] race. I’m
not even halfway through a season yet. It’s
good to keep that in mind. I’ll take the good
days when they come.”
How far has
she come? In her first 12 races last year, she
never finished on the lead lap. Her best
performance came in the season finale at
Homestead, where she finished 19th. This
year, she led a lap under green at Daytona and
finished 14th, one lap down, and then 17th,
three laps down, at Phoenix, a track where she
was 32nd and seven laps down last November.
“I didn’t
think we’d have a top-five this early,” Eury
Jr. said. “I thought we could go to Vegas and
run top-10 pretty easy. I was really impressed
at Phoenix with the way we ran [New Hampshire]
last year and Phoenix in the fall race. To
come out of Phoenix like we did, that was a
major, major jump for us.”
Patrick has
12 races on her JR Motorsports schedule for
2011, and Eury Jr. has high hopes for many of
them. “These first three races have been
pretty awesome,” Eury Jr. said. “We’ve done
everything we’ve wanted to do. We’d have loved
to run top-five, but we’ve been pretty
ecstatic with the way she’s been running.
“Daytona was
definitely a great time with her getting to
run up front with the leaders a little bit. …
Phoenix was really great considering how we
ran last year on the short tracks. We had
trouble anywhere where we had braking.”
The
28-year-old IndyCar Series driver needed that
finish at Phoenix as she will race next week
at Bristol and then not get back in a stock
car until June as she concentrates on the
start of the IndyCar season and the
Indianapolis 500. Her next race will be June
at Chicagoland Speedway.
“When she
comes back to Chicagoland, she will be ready,”
Eury Jr. said. “She knows Bristol is going to
be a big task. … The biggest problem we’re
going to have there is everything is so tight
and you’ve got to be on the guy in front of
you to make passes. That will be her toughest
challenge.”
One of
the keys to her progress has been the addition
of Benson, a former Nationwide and Truck
Series champion, as a driving coach.
“Instead of me spending my time trying to help
her understand the line and stuff off the race
track, I can work on the race car like I
should,” Eury Jr. said. “I’ve got somebody
else there that’s got the experience that has
run at these places that can help her with
that side of it.”
Eury Jr.’s
goal is to keep Patrick on the lead lap.
“The biggest
thing that we’ve noticed is if we can keep her
on the lead lap to halfway through the race –
Kyle [Busch] and [Carl] Edwards are so fast
right now that it’s really hard to stay on the
lead lap the first of the race,” Eury Jr.
said. “If I can keep her on the lead lap the
first half of the race, it seems like it pays
big dividends at the end because that’s when
she really gets rolling.”
It paid big
dividends at Las Vegas as Patrick told Eury
Jr. that the car needed adjustments and she
wanted him to take a swing at it. “I
said, ‘Look, Tony, I could go out there and
might be fine but I’m loose and I’d rather
have you fix it and we’ll just race our way
[back],’” she said. “I had a good race car.”
After this
season, Patrick has a decision to make –
continue doing a split schedule or focus on
just NASCAR or IndyCar. If she continues
to show promise, there likely will be talk of
some Cup races. Patrick has tried to
stay away from talk about her future. “We’ll
just have to see how the season evolves and
when it’s time to start figuring it out, me
and my [management] team will,” she said last
month.
But if she
does go Cup racing, it likely won’t be with JR
Motorsports, which has toyed with the idea of
going Cup racing but would need all the pieces
to fall into place – a solid sponsor as well
as solid performance in the Nationwide Series.
Aric Almirola is running the full schedule in
the team’s other car and is seventh in points
after two races. “If she goes Cup
racing, it will probably be with somebody
else,” Eury Jr. said. “We’ve enjoyed it. We
love working with her right now.
“I don’t
know that it’s something that JR Motorsports
is ready for or can do right now. That’s the
status quo of it. We’re having a good time
with her right now, and I think we’re at the
level we need to be at to serve our partners.”
Eury Jr. has
significant Cup experience as crew chief for
Dale Earnhardt Jr., but he’s not going to be
involved much in Patrick’s decision on what to
do in 2012.
“I’m going
to let her do that deal,” Eury Jr. said.
“She’s still got a lot to learn before we get
to that step. I told her that, ‘You’ve got to
run at least a [full] year of Nationwide just
to kind of get things underneath your belt so
you don’t roll into Darlington for the first
time and you’re in a Cup car. I said,
‘Don’t try to pressure the situation and think
you have to be in Cup right now. Take it at
your pace and make sure you’re competitive.’
No driver in their right mind wants to go over
there and run 30th in the Cup series. All it
does is beat you up, beat you down.”
Danica gets best NASCAR
finish for a woman
Anyone who says Danica
Patrick had her best NASCAR finish Saturday
because of fuel mileage is dead wrong. Patrick
made history with her fourth-place finish, the
best ever for a woman in a national NASCAR
event. That record stood for 62 years. Sara
Christian finished fifth at Pittsburgh in 1949
during NASCAR's inaugural season. Patrick is
the first woman to lead a lap at Indianapolis
and Daytona, the first woman to win a major
open-wheel event and the first woman to finish
in the top four in a NASCAR touring-series
race. (ESPN.com)
Martin wins at Las Vegas
#32-Mark Martin won the
Sam's Town 300 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway for
the 49th win of his career. #31-Justin
Allgaier finished second. #22-Brad Keselowski
was in the lead at the white flag, but cut a
tire down and hit the wall on the final lap.
He stayed on track and finished 3rd. #7-Danica
Patrick finished 4th, her career best and the
best ever finish by a woman in the series. The
rest of the top 10: #16-Trevor Bayne, #60-Carl
Edwards, #20-Denny Hamlin, #6-Ricky Stenhouse,
#38-Jason Leffler, and #09-Kenny Wallace (his
second consecutive top 10). There were 6
cautions for 27 laps and 11 lead changes among
6 leaders. The estimated attendance was
60,000.
Victory Junction Midwest Moving Forward
Pattie Petty, wife of
former NASCAR driver Kyle Petty, is so serious
about making sure the Victory Junction Midwest
camp planned for Wyandotte County becomes a
reality, she has moved to Kansas City. Victory
Junction Midwest, a year-round facility for
children with chronic or life-threatening
illnesses, was to open by the end of 2011, but
it ran into some unexpected problems last
year.
First, the original piece of property - on 71
acres at 8205 Riverview in Kansas City, Kan. -
was deemed unsuitable for a hospital after
soil samples were examined during excavation.
Also, Mike Lepore, the camp's original
president, left last summer for another job in
Chicago, which put the project behind in its
fund-raising efforts. The Pettys have
identified another 70-to-80-acre location for
the $35 million camp closer to Kansas Speedway
and the Village West retail area than the
original site. A benefactor will help buy the
property, and once the core drilling and other
preliminary studies are complete, they hope to
announce the location in the next two weeks.(Kansas

Benson
Eager to Support Community
By:
Steve Kaminski
Johnny Benson Jr. of Grand Rapids
plans to help out some old friends
this racing season. Benson
announced that he intends to race
the West Michigan-based
Racingawareness.com’s Late Model
on a part-time basis in Berlin
Raceway’s new Premier Boyne
Machine Super Lates division. The
class offers template bodied Late
Model stock car racing.
Benson won the 2008 NASCAR Camping
World Truck Series championship,
and he said he continues to search
for an opportunity to return to
the series. A chance to return to
his roots did pop up, though, and
Benson jumped at it.
Local car owners Jeff Striegle,
Norm Jelsma and Mike Bursley
introduced Racingawareness.com
last season and debuted a Modified
at Berlin. The team raised about
$55,000 for the Helen DeVos
Children’s Hospital Foundation.
It was such a success that the
team is adding a Late Model for
this season. Striegle is an
announcer with the Motor Racing
Network and Jelsma is Berlin’s
track announcer. "I’ve known
Jeff and Norm for many, many
years, and they are great guys,"
Benson said. "If it was anyone
other than them, I would have
turned it down. But they have been
in the sport for a long time as
announcers and are trying to give
back to the sport as owners, and I
want to help them out.
"You can’t go wrong helping kids,
either. Grand Rapids is my
hometown, it’s where I grew up,
and if I can help out in the
community and with the foundation,
which is trying to help children
with high-end medical needs, then
I want to do it."
Benson’s first race with the team
is on June 21 in the Rowdy 251,
featuring NASCAR standout Kyle
Busch. Benson, 48, began his
career on West Michigan
short-tracks, and his 1989 Berlin
Late Model track championship
helped launched his NASCAR career.
Benson has won races in each of
NASCAR’s top three levels.
"We have one of the best, if not
the best driver to campaign at
Berlin," Striegle said. "He gives
us the kind of exposure for the
cause that we are looking for.
This completes our team."
Bursley is an owner with Perfect
Circle Racecars of Jenison, and
Benson will be racing a Perfect
Circle car. The team will again
field a Modified, and Dave Lake,
who won Berlin’s Super Stock title
this past season, will race it.
The 2011 Truck season will open
Feb. 18 at Daytona, and Benson
said he hasn’t given up hope that
he will land a ride. "There
is a possibility of running
Daytona, but things will have to
line up pretty quick to make that
happen," Benson said. "Our window
of opportunity is awful small.
There are a lot of teams just
looking for a driver, and there
are some teams looking to win a
championship. I’m looking for a
ride that will give me a chance to
run for a championship."
Berlin’s 61st season is scheduled
to open April 23. Berlin promoter
Mike Blackmer said the new class
has created plenty of interest.
"This is awesome. I can’t wait for
April," Blackmer said. "We have
had a number of guys already
commit, like Brian Campbell and
Johnny VanDoorn and Eric Jones, a
17-year old up-and-comer from
Lansing. We have Kelsey Steele and
Brandon Hermiller and Gabe Ensing
planning to run. We have
reduced prices this year, and our
sales for season tickets are up. I
think you will see our crowds up,
and they will see some great
racing."
Benson set to return to his
home track
RacingAwareness.com announced today that
Grand Rapids, MI. native Johnny Benson Jr.
will be driving the team’s new Premier Boyne
Machine Super Late Model car at Berlin in
2011. While Benson’s NASCAR commitments
remain plentiful, his current schedule
allows him to drive in up to six races in
the new series.
RacingAwareness.com
Foundation, a Michigan based non profit
charitable foundation, supporting Helen
DeVos Children’s Hospital of Grand Rapids
Michigan, is set to campaign both a Berlin
Modified, which the team debuted in the 2010
season and in the (PBMSL) new template body
series introduced by Berlin for 2011. RA,
through various fundraising efforts raised
more than $50,000 for HDVCH in 2010, their
first year in operation.
RA, in partnership with Helen
DeVos Children's Hospital, is dedicated to
enhancing the lives of children and their
families coping with the illness or injury
of a child. The RacingAwareness.com
Foundation's efforts are focused on raising
awareness and funds to launch and support
HDVCH programs and services. RA strives to
achieve this through the unique niche
centered around auto racing, primarily in
the West Michigan area, with the Racing
Awareness Race Team. In addition, RA
engages families with visits to the race
track, meet and greets with drivers, and the
opportunity to divert their attention from
the health care process to sharing time
together.
Benson, who currently resides
in Cornelius, North Carolina, grew up in
Grand Rapids as a second generation race car
driver. Johnny followed in his dad’s
footsteps that lead him to becoming a NASCAR
Champion. Benson won the NASCAR Nationwide
Series Championship in 1995 before winning
the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series
Championship in 2008. In addition, Johnny
has 274 starts and one win in the NASCAR
Sprint Cup Series. Benson recorded 3 wins
in the Nationwide series and 14 wins in the
Camping World Truck Series. Johnny is also
a former Track Champion at the Berlin
Raceway, as well as a former series champion
with the American Speed Association, ASA.
The new Premier Boyne Machine
Super Lates Series is the brainchild of
Berlin track owner, Mike Blackmer. Mike
patterned the new series and rules around
the Championship Racing Association, CRA.
The track’s schedule aligns to CRA’s off
weekends for their 2011 schedule. “We
anticipate the biggest names in the series
running at our track this summer. Our
schedule allows the teams to race at Berlin
when the CRA series is not in action. This
makes it a win - win for everyone involved”,
says track owner Blackmer.
Benson is currently scheduled
to make his debut behind the wheel of the RA
template car on Tuesday June 21st
for the Rowdy 251, named for NASCAR driver
Kyle Busch who is also scheduled to
compete.
