Johnny Benson headed into Dover International Speedway
looking for another top-10 finish in order to move up in
the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series points. After coming
off his third career NCTS pole and an eighth place
finish last week at Mansfield Motorsports Park, Benson
and his No. 23 TCUV team were looking to keep that
momentum rolling in Dover.
Running incredibly strong right out of the box, Benson
and his team threw everything they had at the truck in
order to get his Tundra set up for qualifying. With a
great qualifying draw, Benson ran a very fast 23.195
second lap and qualified himself in the second position
for the start of Friday night’s race, falling only to
teammate Mike Skinner.
As the green flag waved over the 36-truck field, the two
BDR teammates of Mike Skinner and Johnny Benson led the
way on the front row for the second week in a row.
Having to fight his TCUV Tundra on the track almost
immediately, Benson would drive hard in order to
maintain his position. As the caution flag would wave
on lap 50, Benson would dive down pit road for four
tires, fuel, a trackbar and wedge adjustment. With a
great pit stop, Benson would restart the race back in
the second position.
With his truck once gain sliding bad on the one-mile
track, Benson would have to remain calm and try to keep
his position on the track. With the leader bringing out
the caution on lap 95, Benson would come to pit road for
adjustments again. This time taking four tires, fuel, a
trackbar and an air pressure adjustment, Benson would
restart the 200 mile race in the fourth position.
As Benson continued to drive deep into the corners, he
would radio over to crew chief Trip Bruce that it felt
as if his No. 23 TCUV Tundra was pivoting the left side
and he wanted to pull rubbers on the next stop.
Showing why he is the best on the track, Benson fought
his truck in order to keep his fourth place spot. With
the seventh caution of the night coming out on lap 131
for debris, Benson would get his last chance to fix his
truck before the end of the race. Taking sticker tires
and fuel, as well as pulling rubbers, Benson would leave
pit road quickly, too quickly.
Benson would be penalized for speeding on pit road and
would be forced to the tail end of the longest line.
Therefore Benson would now have 65 laps to try and fight
his way back to the front, this time with a tight truck.
Plowing his way through the field, Benson would begin
picking off positions one by one and by the end of the
race he would cross the line in the tenth position.
With BDR teammate Scott Speed winning the race and with
all three BDR trucks finishing in the top-10 yet again,
the truck trio is looking strong heading into the ninth
race of the season.
Benson and the rest of the Craftsman Truck Series will
head to Texas Motor Speedway next week. The race will
be televised live June 6th on Speed Channel.
