Setzer Wins at Martinsville
Dennis Setzer survived a green-white-checker finish to claim victory in the Kroger 250 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race Saturday at Martinsville Speedway.  By putting his Duck Head Footwear/Aquadock Dodge Ram into victory lane, Setzer gave Dodge its first NCTS victory since 2005.

Finishing behind Setzer were Matt Crafton in the Menards/Ideal Door Chevrolet Silverado, Rick Crawford in the Power Stroke Diesel by International Ford, Ken Schrader in the Federated Auto Parts Toyota and Erik Darnell In the Northern Tool + Equipment Ford.

Setzer prevailed in a single-file restart. Not so happy was Mike Skinner, who was in third place when Busch dumped him on Lap 248. But it wasn’t Busch’s fault, as Skinner ran out of gas. But on the green-white-checkered, Busch dumped Johnny Benson going for second place, knocking both trucks out.

Gateway Adds ASA Race to Craftsman Truck Weekend
The American Speed Association (ASA) has been the foundation of some of the greatest names in racing, such as Alan Kulwicki, Rusty Wallace, and Mark Martin. The tradition of the ASA is returning to Gateway International Raceway as it was announced that the ASA Late Model Series will race an 80-lap, 100-mile contest at the 1.25-mile oval on Sept. 6, immediately following the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series event.

"We have worked very hard to secure this partnership with GIR and we look forward to an outstanding race event at one of racing's premier facilities" ASALMS Owner Ron Varney said at a press conference at Tri-County Speedway prior to the running of the Rumble in the Hills/North Carolina 200 there.

The ASA ran at GIR in 2000 with three-time series champion Butch Miller taking the win and Scott Wimmer finishing second. Gateway International Raceway Vice President and General Manager Lenny Batycki said the addition of the ASALMS Challenge Series enhances a great weekend of racing at the Madison, Ill., facility.  "When you think of the ASA, you think great short-track racing," he said. "The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series has brought that rough, beatin'-and-bangin' style of racing to tracks all over the country since 1995 and having the ASA Late Model Series race here after the Truck Series show on Sept. 6 will only add to the great racing experience at Gateway."

St. Louis native and NASCAR Cup Series champion Rusty Wallace rose to national prominance after winning the 1983 ASA championship. One of his crew members on that team was Mike Mittler, the owner of the Foristell, Mo.-based MB Motorsports NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series team that launched the careers of current NASCAR Sprint Cup Series stars Carl Edwards, Jamie McMurray, and Regan Smith.  Rookies of the year in the series include Kenny Wallace (1986), two-time NCTS winner at GIR Ted Musgrave (1987), defending Gateway winner Johnny Benson (1990), and defending two-time Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson (1998).

The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at Gateway International Raceway is scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m. local time, with the ASA Late Model Series expected to take the track upon completion of the NCTS races.

Eric Davis

Eric is the engine tuner for the #23 Bill Davis Racing Craftsman Truck and resides in High Point, NC.  During the week he works at TRD.  This is the second year he has been part of the #23 team.

Why do you work on a NASCAR team?  It's something I always wanted to do.  Engines interested me and that what I wanted to do for a career.

What has been your most rewarding moment in your racing career?   Getting that first win as an engine tuner with Johnny and the #23 team.

What has been the most challenging moment in your racing career?
Trying to quit smoking at the race track.  I have tried it twice.  Also adapting to the different drivers, crew chiefs and teams.

What would you like the fans to know about you?  My nickname is Quiznos  .....

And anything else that you would like to share ...  I love being on the water  ...

Thank you, Eric for sharing with the fans!!

NASCAR NOW
By:  John Daly - The Daly Planet

The amazing changes at ESPN continue where NASCAR is concerned. One of the most dynamic has been the new Monday "roundtable" version of NASCAR Now.

This one hour show has moved from a single-anchor scripted program to a vibrant discussion of very diverse racing topics. Allen Bestwick has been the key to leading this charge, and continued on this Monday to direct the conversation between a brand new group of panelists.

ESPN2 viewers found themselves looking at the most balanced group of NASCAR veterans the network has assembled so far this season. Mike Massaro has worked for years to represent ESPN where NASCAR is concerned, and his insightful commentary from a media perspective is straightforward and informative.

Ray Evernham is working hard for ESPN this season to overcome some credibility issues that arose from his personal choices, and continues to use his diverse background as both a crew chief and owner to his advantage. ESPN is going to use Evernham in a variety of roles this season, and he seems to be a natural on-camera.

Finally, it may have caused fans to do a double-take, but there he was. Sitting alongside of Bestwick was Johnny Benson. In NASCAR TV land, there was no bigger story a couple of years back than Benson and Bestwick getting summarily fired from the Inside NEXTEL Cup Racing program they had both anchored for years on SPEED.

The irony of a well-spoken and experienced Benson perched on his chair in the NASCAR Now studio was not lost on veteran fans.  Complete Story
