Bristol winner Johnny Benson (#23 Exide Batteries
Toyota) is the season's fourth multiple winner. The
victory was Benson's first on a short track. Benson and
Ron Hornaday Jr. (#33 Camping World Chevy) are the only
drivers with top-10 finishes on all five short tracks in
2007.

Craftsman Celebrates 80th
Anniversary
As Craftsman
celebrates its 80th anniversary in August, the Official
Tools of NASCAR will offer a special bonus for teams
competing in the Craftsman Truck Series. For both
Craftsman Truck Series races run in that month, at
Nashville Superspeedway on August 11 and Bristol Motor
Speedway on August 22, the team leading the race on lap
80 will receive an additional $8,000 prize. Trucks
participating in the races will carry a distinctive
Craftsman 80th Anniversary decal. The winners will be
acknowledged during the race broadcasts, and the special
awards will be given during drivers' introductions at
the following race. For the Nashville and Bristol races,
Craftsman is providing special 80th Anniversary logo
caps for the teams in Victory Circle. Mike
Skinner won the bonus at Nashville and JOHNNY won in
Bristol!!!!!
Benson wins at Bristol!
Pit strategy and smart
driving were the key ingredients for #23-Johnny Benson's
win in the O'Reilly 200 at Bristol Motor Speedway. Crew
chief Trip Bruce made the decision to make their lone pit
stop later in the race, taking on four tires; restarting
in 17th position.
With less than 30 laps to go, the second place truck of
#51-Kyle Busch got loose causing both he and then race
leader, #6-Travis Kvapil to spin. Benson cleared the spin,
and went on to take the lead and capture the win.
Benson also received the $8,000 bonus from Craftsman in
celebration of their 50th Anniversary. Following the spin,
Kvapil worked his way back to finish in the 11th position
Rounding out the top ten were #77-Brendan Gaughan in
second, #21-Mark Martin third, #5-Mike Skinner fourth,
#14-Rick Crawford fifth, #33-Ron Hornaday Jr. sixth,
#4-Mike Bliss seventh, #60-Jack Sprague eighth, #2-Cale
Gale ninth, #50-Danny O'Quinn tenth. The new surface at
Bristol provided great side-by-side racing throughout the
entire race.
Benson holds on to win Truck race at Bristol
Johnny Benson held off Brendan Gaughan for
the final 16 laps to win the O'Reilly 200 Truck Series
race on Wednesday night at Bristol Motor Speedway.
Benson twice kept
Gaughan at bay, first on a restart with 16 laps to go,
then on the race's final green flag with five to go.
Todd Bodine spun with 10 laps to go, spilling some debris
on the newly paved surface and forcing a red flag. Once
the cleanup was completed, the action got going again and
Benson kept newlywed Gaughan on his bumper.
It was Benson's second
win of the season and first at Bristol. Points
leader Mike Skinner finished in fourth.

Benson to Busch - Let's Race Next Time
Johnny Benson Jr. asked Kurt
Busch to stop by Berlin Raceway again in the future, and
next time, he encouraged the 2004 NASCAR Nextel Cup
champion to bring his helmet and race with him.
"We have to get you in one of these cars, because I think
you would have a lot of fun," Benson told Busch from atop
the Berlin frontstretch deck.
It's an offer Busch
might want to refuse, because Benson doesn't make life
easy for others at his home track. Benson, making his
first Berlin appearance of the season, demonstrated
Wednesday night that he can still put a hurt on the field
in Marne
Benson held off Billy
Shotko of West Olive and defending track champion Tom
Thomas of Grandville for the win in The Chet, a 100-lap
Late Model feature race before nearly 3,000 fans. It was
the third time Benson has won the annual race in the seven
years that Berlin has hosted it in honor of the track
founder, the late Chester Mysliwiec.
Busch, a Las Vegas
native, was at the track to sign autographs, and he was
among the first to congratulate Benson. "It was a
lot of fun to watch Johnny Benson race, and the whole
field," said Busch, who will race in Sunday's 3M
Performance 400 at Michigan International Speedway. "These
cars are cool. I haven't seen Late Models look like that
because I'm from the West Coast."
Benson, starting fifth,
took the lead from Joe Bush on lap 22 and led the rest of
the way. The NASCAR Craftsman Truck veteran earned $5,000.
He will return to Berlin Sept. 29 for the International
Supermodified Association race.
Benson built his Late
Model over the winter in his North Carolina-based shop,
and he previously raced it this season at M-40 Speedway
and Kalamazoo Speedway but didn't finish either race.
Wednesday's results were much more favorable for Benson,
who won the 1989 Berlin Late Model track championship
before finding NASCAR success.
"I don't think the car
is very good yet, but it was good enough to win," said
Benson, 44, a Forest Hills Northern graduate. "We tested
(Tuesday), and I thought the car was good enough to win,
but my dad didn't think so. He said it was missing
something So we took it back to the shop and looked
it over a little bit and made a couple of changes this
morning."
Shotko nearly pulled off
his first Late Model career win. He started 11th in the
23-car field and patiently worked his way through the
field to challenge Benson, but he was never able to over
the lead. "The cautions really hurt me,"
Shotko said. "The longer the race went green, the better
my car got, and Johnny got a little tighter on the longer
runs. He would run the high side a little bit, but
when I got to him, he would move right down to the bottom.
After the race, he said his frequency was messed up, and
he got the radio broadcast of the races by mistake. So he
knew when I was coming. I thought he had a mirror in his
car or a spotter in the stands, but he was listening on
the radio."
Busch headed to MIS
after Wednesday's program and will qualify his No. 2
Miller Lite Dodge on Friday. Busch, who won two weeks ago
at Pocono, has climbed into 12th place in the point
standings, the final cutoff spot for the Chase to the
Championship. Three races remain before NASCAR's playoff
begins. "We have had good consistent finishes as of
late," Busch said. "We are not out of the woods yet,
though. We have three races to go and hopefully we will
have some smooth races ahead to get locked into the
Chase."
Chris Koslek slipped
underneath Dave Lake with two laps to go to win the 30-lap
Super Stock feature, his second win of the season. Lake
broke his collarbone on Saturday after rolling his
semi-truck in an exhibition before returning to make a bid
for the victory. Marc Coleman outran Tim
Stuart and Brian VanZalen in the 20-lap Sportsman main.

Marne, MI-- In his first
visit to Berlin Raceway this season, Johnny Benson proved
that he still knows his way around the historic race
track, edging out Billy Shotko to claim victory in the
$5,000-to-win "The Chet." In Berlin's other two
divisions, Marc Coleman scored his first feature win in
the Instant Cash Advance Sportsman division and Chris
Koslek notched win number two in the Engine Pro Super
Stock division.
With weather threatening,
the Coors Light Late Model 100-lap feature kicked the
evening off with an action-packed race, #101 Joe Bush and
#16 John VanDoorn lead the field to the green flag. #1
Randy Sweet was on the move early, making his way around
VanDoorn while Benson made his way around #00 Andy
Ponstein. Sweet was stalking Bush for the lead and Benson
was lurking in third. Caution was out early, lap 6 saw
#33 Dave Stehouwer spinning coming out of turn 2. On the
restart, all cars were single file. Bush got a good
restart and Benson was steadily catching Sweet. The #37
machine of Terry Senneker was moving up, doing battle with
#15 Brian Maxim, #28 Scott Thomas, #27 Billy Shotko and
#82 Tom Thomas for the 5th position. Senneker
was the first to clear the pack, followed by Shotko. Both
were able to catch and pass VanDoorn while Benson passed
Sweet for 2nd, setting his sights on leader
Bush. On lap 18, caution was displayed again, but that
turned into an eight-minute red flag; #21 Terry VanHaitsma
spun coming out of 4 collecting #19 Nick Shotko, #77 Brian
Campbell, #46 Dave Sensiba, #9 Rick Sexton and #32 Ross
Meeuwsen. All were able to rejoin the field on the
restart. Lap 22 saw the first pass for the lead when
Benson drove past Bush and pulled away. It looked as if
no car would be able to catch him, but B. Shotko was
working his was to the front, making quick work of
Senneker, Sweet and Bush.
Benson began lapping cars on
lap 31 and navigating the lapped traffic allow B. Shotko
to catch up, shaving time off of Benson’s lead every lap.
The lapped traffic was also problematic for Bush and T.
Thomas, but a caution on lap 49 bunched the field back
up. Benson had a good restart, but B. Shotko wasn’t far
behind. Caution was out again on lap 56, S. Thomas had
spun coming out of turn 2. The restart let series
dominator T. Thomas catch up to 2nd place B.
Shotko, but Shotko held his own, managing to pull away
from T. Thomas. As the laps were winding down, lapped
traffic allowed B. Shotko to inch closer to Benson’s
bumper. B. Shotko was able to pull a fender the inside of
Benson, but Benson held him off to win “The Chet.” B.
Shotko had to settle for second and the rest of the top
ten were T. Thomas, Senneker, Bush, Sweet, #57 Alan
Marcott, #15 Brian Maxim, S. Thomas and #3 Dave Seabrook.
The Instant Cash Advance
Sportsman division took the track next and caution was out
before a lap was complete. The #67 car of Mike Welch spun
on the backstretch resulting in a complete restart with
#11 Tim Stuart and #81 Marc Coleman on the front row.
Coleman took the lead right away and left the rest of the
field in side-by-side battles. The cars of #33 Allen
Davis, #22 Ken Roelofs, #57 Allan Troup, #97 Andy
Stormzand, #40 Dave Cutler and #15 Garison Jewett put on a
great show for the crowd racing in a tight pack, but their
battle let Coleman pull away to get his first-ever feature
win at Berlin Raceway. Stuart, #44 Brian VanZalen,
Jewett, Stormzand, Troup, Roelofs, A. Davis, Cutler and
#00 Dennis man rounded out the top ten.
Providing the finale of the
evening was the Engine Pro Super Stock division; #71 Kyle
Ballard and #55 Dave Lake started the feature on the front
row. Lake, who was injured last Saturday during the Big
Rig race, took the lead from Ballard on lap 9 and began to
pull away from the field, but caution waving one lap later
didn’t let him get far. The caution came out because #5
Ray VanAllsburg spun coming out of turn 4 and that
collected the cars of #8 Billy Eppink, #23 Mike Bursley,
#15 Pete Ruttan and #1 Brian Wiersma. On the restart, #77
Andrew Nylaan and #123 Chris Koslek were making their way
to the front of the field. With two laps to go, Koslek
got around Lake for the lead and got his second with of
the season. The rest of the top ten were Nylaan, Lake,
Ballard, #13 James Haney, #X Ray Clay, #12 Josh Slade, #10
Bob Spencer, #15 Mat McClarren and #66 Nate Walton.

A Fan's Point of View
By Klaus and Paulette Price
The report card will be tear stained.
It was sunny and 96 degrees when the green flag dropped. The
little #23 Toyota was sporty today. Johnny was happy with it
from the beginning and in true form, said little on the
radio. During the lap 42 caution, the pit crew pulled off a
great stop for four and gas.
Johnny picked off some spots and when there was discussion
about his speeds after the pit stop, he said he had been
cautious during the first run, but not after the pit stop.
He was running as fast as the leader.
Under caution at lap 64, Johnny came upon a safety worker at
the rear of a safety truck and he said it looked like they
had run out of gas and the man was going to put some in the
truck. He was told no, that the gas can was one the 07 had
dropped on the track after taking it out of the pit road.
LOL
On lap 97, Johnny was running 3rd when he came on the radio
and said his tires were going. They had like 55 laps on
them. He dropped to 4th and at lap 102 said it felt like he
had a blistered tire. He was told to hang on and be careful
with the tires. At lap 109 he blew a tire and hit the wall
in turn one. (At this point KP struck the empty seat in
front of him with his open hand, and the air turned blue
above his seat.) Johnny advised the truck was junk and he
took it to the garage. This ended his night and he finished
30th.

Craftsman Truck driver Johnny Benson and an appearance
by NASCAR Nextel Cup driver Kurt Busch.
Busch, who will be in Michigan for
the NASCAR Nextel Cup race at Michigan International
Speedway that weekend, will be signing autographs from
his souvenir trailer and doing radio and PA interviews
during the race. Busch is a Las Vegas native and
the current driver of the #2 Penske Racing Miller Lite
car. He is currently 12th in Nextel Cup point standings
after claiming his first win of the 2007 season at
Pocono on August 5. Grand Rapids native Benson sits 5th
in the Craftsman Truck series point standings and has

and Comerica will donate one dollar for every ticket
sold from the August 15 race to St. John's Home. A large
portion of funding for the home comes from charitable
contributions from the community, such as the Berlin
Raceway/Comerica Bank fundraiser. In 2006, "The Chet"
presented by Comerica Bank raised $5,000 for St.
John's.
Berlin Raceway drivers will also be
making appearances at Comerica Banks in the Grand Rapids
area on Friday, August 10. Ryan Schanbel (#97.9 Pro
Stock) will be at Comerica Bank's Woodland Banking

St. John's Home is a nationally
acclaimed, non-denominational, non-profit organization
that has been devoted to West Michigan's children since
1889. Located on Knapp St. in Grand Rapids, St. John's

year; and the Discovery Program, an adolescent substance
abuse center for teens. St. John's boasts a success rate
of more than 80% of their students (vs. the state
average of 55%) who leave the home to become
economically independent and guarantees every student a
college education or vocational training after high
school.
This is the seventh year that the
partnership between Berlin Raceway and Comerica Bank has
resulted in contributions to community organizations.
Contributions totaling $37,406 have been made to
organizations such as the Berlin 4-H program and the
Todd Senneker Memorial Foundation (which awards a
scholarship to a senior from Wayland Union High School
in memory of the late Berlin Raceway driver), as well as
to St. John's Home.
Other organizations benefiting from
monetary donations through Berlin Raceway's Community
Support program include the Juvenile Diabetes
Foundation, the Chris Bradley Memorial Scholarship Fund,
the Marne Lions Club and the Wright Township Sewer Fund.
Berlin and its partners have contributed a total of
$64,817 to the community through this program.
Comerica Bank Regional President Joe

Truck Series to Canada Someday?
Cup may be a long way off, there's talk of a Craftsman
Truck Series race in Calgary, possibly tied to the
city's Stampede, and rumors of a NASCAR event in the
Toronto area, perhaps spearheaded by Molson. "We look at
a market like Ontario and it's the fifth largest in
North America and aside from being a great opportunity,
how do you not look at it?" said NASCAR's international
director, Robbie Weiss. "A long-term strategy will take
time, but let's see where this goes. But I think we will
continue to look at ways to bring the sport closer to
fans across the country." (Note: That would
suit Johnny just fine as he raced at Calgary during his
ASA years).
Wild Nashville finish in 2006: For Johnny Benson (#23
Toyota Certified Used Vehicles Toyota), his victory in
the 2006 Toyota Tundra 200 was a case of being in the
right place at the right time. Benson never held the
lead until the final trip around Nashville
Superspeedway's 1.333-mile concrete surface and found
third place the place to be in a green-white-checkered
shoot-out. The winner's success came at the expense of
teammate Mike Skinner (#5 Toyota Tundra Toyota) and 2006
series champion Todd Bodine (#30 Lumber Liquidators
Toyota), who had traded the lead four times over the
race's final 72 laps before contact left both trucks
wedged against the Turn 3 wall. Benson's success marked
the second time in the 2006 season the race winner led
only the final lap. Ironically, Bodine measured Skinner
in the same manner in June at Texas Motor Speedway. The
outcome of the race didn't blunt Bodine's charge to the
championship - he still wound up with a finish of eighth
while Skinner dropped to 17th. But he and his team still
think about the finish. "We classify it as a 'laughable
memory' and we put it behind us," said Bodine. "Mike
says we're both boneheads, but we know better than that!
We've chalked it up to hard-headed racing."
BHR Hosts Annual Open House
Bobby Hamilton Racing will
once again host its Open House on Thursday, August 9th.
The event will run from 5:00 - 8:00pm. It will include
an autograph session, pit crew competition, racing games
and much more. There will be a $5 charge per person at
the door; children five and under are free. All proceeds
benefit the American Cancer Society.
Since Bobby Hamilton Sr. passed away in January after an
intense battle with Head and Neck Cancer, BHR invited
the Vanderbilt Ingram Cancer Center in conjunction with
the Yul Brynner Foundation to offer free Head and Neck
Cancer Screenings to fans that attend the event. Another
fan favorite, the autograph session, will begin at 6:00
p.m. Ken Schrader, Mike Bliss, Joe Ruttman, Brendan
Gaughan, and Jack Sprague will participate in the
autograph session. Following the autograph session the
IR Pit Stop Challenge will begin at 7:00 p.m. on the
front driveway. BHR is located at 220 Industrial Dr. in
Mt. Juliet, TN. Fans are asked to park at Mt. Juliet
Church of Christ located at 1940 N. Mt. Juliet Rd.
Shuttle buses will transport you to the shop from this
location. For more information call: 615-754-6868.
The late Bobby Hamilton will be remembered during the
pre race show before the Toyota Tundra 200 Craftsman
Truck Series race on Saturday, August 11. Race fans are
encouraged to wear their Bobby Hamilton paraphernalia.
Bobby Hamilton played a major role at the Nashville
Superspeedway, having participated in the groundbreaking
ceremonies in 1999, being honored with a street named
after him at the inaugural race in 2001, and winning the
coveted Sam Bass designed trophy guitar in August 2004.
A Night in Sandusky
After a successful finish in the Craftsman Truck Series
on Friday night at OReilly Raceway Park, Johnny traveled
to Sandusky, Ohio to compete in the Hy-Miller weekend at
Sandusky.
Since Johnny missed out on qualifiying and the racing
action that was held on Friday, he was given a
provisional to compete on Saturday. The #74
supermodified had a new set-up in the car and proved to
be a challenge to drive. Johnny started at the
rear of the field and made his way through the field to
finish 10th.

Race Report - ORP
By: Toyota Motorsports
Three Tundras finished in the top-10 Friday night at
O’Reilly Raceway Park with Johnny Benson (second), Todd
Bodine (sixth) and Jack Sprague (ninth). Ted Musgrave
(12th) and David Green (15th) logged top-15 runs. Other
Tundras in the field included: Mike Skinner (20th), Ryan
Mathews (25th), Terry Cook (26th) and Justin Labonte
(27th).
Johnny's Comments:
Did you have anything for race-winner Ron Hornaday at the
end? “I was working on him a little bit there
with about 40 or 50 to go, but could never quite get it
done. I used up my tires trying to get by him, and didn’t
really have anything for him there at the end. It seemed
like everyone needed to run the high groove to be fast, so
that made it hard to pass anybody. I just couldn’t quite
get the truck to cut in the corner they way it needed to.
Overall, it was a good night, though.”
Why did the
team decide to bring a new truck to ORP?
“The other short track trucks were just old. We weren’t
real satisfied with how we were at some of the other short
tracks earlier this season, so we decided to bring what we
thought was our best stuff, which was a new truck. The
truck was decent here, and obviously I’m pretty happy with
a second-place finish, but I just wish we could’ve had a
little bit more at the end.”
BGNRacing.com to TheHotLap.com
BGNRacing.com, the leading independent website dedicated
exclusively to the NASCAR Busch Series - has changed it's
name! After the series dropped the "Grand National"
moniker in 2003 and just six months before sponsor
Anheuser-Busch will end its 26-season-long relationship
with the number two division, we've decided to introduce
the new name TheHotLap.com!
Why TheHotLap.com? It's easy to remember and there are no
sponsor tie-ins. After signing a new sponsor to the
premier division in 2004, the sanctioning body has already
seen the Cup Series undertake its second name change. With
our new name, we're avoiding any possible name changes
again in the future.
Along with the name change, TheHotLap.com would like to
announce changes behind the scenes as well. While the new
look is obvious, new owners are also on board. Amanda
Brahler, who has been with BGNRacing.com since 2002, Phil
Cavali, the website's photographer over the last two
seasons and Duane Wood are now in charge. Thank you to the
fans and sponsors, Gerling Sports and Alabama Motorsports
Park for your continued support.
We look forward to seeing you at the racetrack! Follow
our sponsors' banners to visit their websites and learn
more about them. Without their support, we wouldn't exist.
All of us at TheHotLap.com have many great things in the
works with the goal of becoming a bigger and better place
for the Busch Series fan. While we don't want to divulge
too much just yet, make sure to stay tuned for a new look,
new features and great giveaways from here on out through
the start of the 2008 season!
