Bristol Testing
BRISTOL, Tenn. -- The new concrete surface
at Bristol Motor Speedway received positive reviews from
NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series drivers during a test
session on Monday. Thirty teams were at Bristol turning
the first laps around the 0.533-mile oval track since it
was resurfaced following the Nextel Cup Series race on
March 25.
Todd Bodine was the
first truck on the track when the test session started and
came away impressed. "This is by far the best
revamping of a track ever," Bodine said. "No doubt about
it. The people here knew what they wanted with the re-do
and they went out and did it. This is the way it should be
done."
The resurfacing was the
first at the track since 1992, when the asphalt track was
replaced by an all-concrete surface. Although no major
changes were made to the track, variable banking was added
to the turns to help smooth the transition to the
straightaways. The track is also three feet wider now,
which leads some drivers to believe a third -- or "high"
-- groove will come into play during the race.
"I think if we're out
there racing and we get bottle-necked up, we'll find a new
groove," Rick Crawford said. "You won't have to force
anybody to go to the high side -- if they need to pass,
they'll be there."
Brendan Gaughan agreed
with Crawford after watching some drivers test the high
line Monday morning. "Todd Bodine, Mike Skinner and
Ron Hornaday were the first ones out there and all three
of them went to the top to see if they could run up
there," Gaughan said. "It was definitely interesting to
see guys [drive] two grooves off the bottom."
The second and perhaps
third grooves will develop as more laps are run on the
track. The rubber from the tires will expand the grooves,
resulting in more side-by-side racing.
"It definitely gives you
a better opportunity than ever to pass," Johnny Benson
said. "We're all so used to running the bottom groove it's
awful hard to make yourself go up there. But that outside
groove is going to be good once they get rubber on the
track.
"It's definitely
smoother and they've done a tremendous job. The
transitions are better both going into the corners and
coming out of the corners. It's just going to take a
little time to get some rubber on it to get it seasoned.
The place is going to be pretty awesome once that
happens."
The resurfacing job has
even converted drivers who were against the project, like
points leader Mike Skinner. "When we were told they
were going to redo this place, we were very, very
concerned but it's an A-plus," Skinner said. "It really
isn't any different. It's Bristol."

Kalamazoo Klash Update
After making repairs to the body from racing at M-40
Speedway, Johnny and his crew traveled to Kalamazoo
Speedway for the Kalamazoo Klash. The practice
session was held all afternoon and Johnny did his best to
get his car dialed in. The cars darted out of the
pits one at a time for qualifying. Johnny's time was
good enough for 16th fastest - locking him into the field.
Johnny set an easy pace at the start of the 100 lap
segment and patiently picked his way through the field.
By the time the checkered flag flew, Johnny was in 7th.
During the break, the team thrashed on the car making the
necessary changes and tried to cool the engine down.
As soon as the green flag dropped, Johnny knew he was in
trouble as he was sideways coming out of turn two.
Johnny brought his #10 Exide - Aarons - Berger Chevrolet
into the pits for good and finished 20th. A
big thanks to Russ Hoekwater, Ron Piechocki, Bill Byrne,
Jim Kurtz, Jason Blaine and Stanley Rydarwicz for all their help.

The JBFC sends their sympathy to the family
of Matt Berger Family (Berger Chevrolet) on the
passing of his mother, Kathryn Berger ....
Kathryn Lynn (Dinny) Berger, aged 67, devoted wife,
beloved mother, and adored grandmother, entered into the
presence of her savior, Jesus Christ, Sunday, July 15,
2007. Her sudden departure will be missed by many. She
will be remembered for her joyful hospitality, kindness
and generosity to all she knew.
She was born in Grand Rapids to Max and Dorothy (Napieralski)
Ludlow. She was a 1958 graduate of East Grand Rapids High
School. She kept in touch with many of her classmates and
continued to be active in the planning and execution of
the "Class of '58" reunions. She was a former member of
the Steketee Guild and the Kent Garden Club. Her happiest
moments were the ones she spent doting on her four
wonderful grandchildren. They put the sparkle in her smile
and the twinkle in her eye!
She will be sadly missed by Tyler, Macey, and Morgan
Berger and Travis Faulkner. She enjoyed traveling with her
husband over the years and most recently to their Northern
Home in Bay Harbor, Michigan. She is also survived by her

NASCAR Defends Drug-Testing Policy
NASCAR believes strongly that its substance-abuse policy
works well and encourages the sport's drivers to take an
active role in its application. "Our policy is based
on reasonable suspicion, and in the agreement ... it lays
out a lot of things to look for that are out of the
ordinary," said Jim Hunter, NASCAR's vice president for
corporate communication.
"Anytime (drivers)
suspect that someone is abusing, they can come up to one
of our officials, to me, to (John) Darby, to Mike Helton
and we'll investigate. I think they have a
responsibility to let us know."
Several drivers, Kevin
Harvick and Jeff Burton among them, called on NASCAR this
weekend to step up its drug testing in response to Truck
series driver Aaron Fike's arrest last weekend on drug
charges. "You have to guard against somebody trying
to get someone bounced just to get rid of the
competition," Hunter said.
"We test a lot of people
and we just don't talk about it. If you announce all your
tests, you're putting a cloud over whomever you test,
including those who come back clean. I respect the
opinions of our drivers. However, the drivers don't know
who we test and when we test them."
Johnny Finishes 14th
The night racing at Kentucky
Speedway proved to be a challenge for Johnny and the BDR
#23 Racing team. He never really got an opportunity
to keep his Toyota Tundra in the top ten after qualifying
11th. Teammate Ryan Matthews earned the pole
position. PR to follow.

NASCAR Needs More
Drug Testing
Kevin Harvick
questioned NASCAR's drug testing policy after Craftsman
Truck Series driver Aaron Fike was arrested and charged
with possession of drugs last weekend.
"I believe that every driver and every national series
should be drug tested a couple of times a year randomly
regardless of who you are, what you are doing," Harvick
said on Friday at Chicagoland Speedway. "We owe it to the
sponsors and the fans to 100 percent know this is a clean
environment. It would eliminate a lot of those problems of
the younger guys that disrespect the sport and the
system."
Jeff Burton said he would like to see series officials do
even more drug testing. "I honestly wish that we would
test more than we do," Burton said. "I wish that we would
have a random number of drug tests throughout the year -
you know you're going to do five or six every year, or
whatever the number is. There's too much at stake for this
sport, too much at stake for the drivers, the racetrack,
the crew members on pit road," Burton said
Congratulations!
The JBFC would like to congratulate Rocky Ryan - JB's
spotter during Nextel Cup companion races who is getting
married to Kathy Moore in a ceremony at Childress
Vineyards on Tuesday, July 17th. Rocky also spots
for Jeff Burton in the Nextel Cup Series and Scott Wimmer
in the BUSCH Series.
The newlyweds plan to honeymoon at the end of the 2007
NASCAR season in Maui. Ryan will resume his spotter duty
the upcoming [Busch Series] weekend at Gateway
International Raceway for driver Scott Wimmer.

Raceway management recognizes the huge outpouring of grief
from Lee's friends and fans and has consulted with the
family regarding their wishes as to how they would like
the racing community to celebrate Lee's life. With the
Anderson family's blessing, Berlin will provide an outlet
for that grief in the following manner:
* The Late Model Night with a special 100-lap Coors Light
Late Model feature. In honor of
Anderson, who drove the #18 car, the race will be extended
to 118 laps.
* Lee's green #18 will be added to the
wall of the track as a permanent memorial to the fallen
racer
* A moment of silence will take place before the races.
* Lee's father Denny Anderson, also a former Berlin
Raceway driver, will take part in pre-race ceremonies
before the Late Model feature by pacing the field in Lee's
race car.
* Fans in attendance will have the opportunity to donate
to a fund being set up to cover funeral expenses and for
Anderson's three-year-old daughter Kaileigh.
* The Shotko family will be selling t-shirts honoring
Lee's memory, with proceeds going to his daughter Kaileigh.
They will be available at a table on the main concourse
Saturday.
Anderson, 33, of Walker, was an accomplished and popular
driver at Berlin Raceway. He was in his 10th season racing
at the Marne track and had won two of the three races he
entered this season, most recently on June 9. Anderson
finished second in points in the top Coors Light Late
Model division in 2001 and 2004. He had spent the last
three seasons concentrating on starting his business and
traveling to compete in races around the midwest. Anderson
owned Perfect Circle Race Cars of Grand Rapids, a company
that builds and repairs race cars.
Bill Davis Racing and Toyota
With
the exception of rival Nextel Cup manufacturers, few have
been satisfied with Toyota’s pace of progress in its
inaugural season at NASCAR’s top competitive level.
But
Toyota’s substantial success in NASCAR’s other top
divisions provides a sharp contrast in results, and Bill
Davis Racing has been central to the manufacturer’s
promising development, both on and off the track.
Dave
Blaney, BDR’s featured NASCAR Nextel Cup driver in the #22
Caterpillar Camry, has delivered Toyota’s first pole
position in both the Busch Series (California) and NNC
Series (New Hampshire), as well as being standard bearer
for the manufacturer’s Nextel Cup effort.
Blaney
ranks highest in points (35th) among the seven full-time
Toyota drivers, and has qualified for all but two of the
18 races to date, a rate more than 25 percentage points
higher than the remainder of the Toyota stable.
Until
by-passing the Milwaukee Busch Series race in June for his
NNC commitment in Sonoma, Blaney ranked second in points
for most of the season in the #10 Camry for owner Todd
Braun, and is now ranked fourth as one of three Toyota
drivers in the top-five in the manufacturer’s first Busch
season.
On
Saturday, Blaney added a third-place finish in the Busch
race at Daytona to his runner-up effort during Speedweeks,
Toyota’s top ’07 finish along with David Reutimann’s
second-place finish at Nashville in April.
But it
is in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series where Toyota’s
long-term competition strategy is now at full-speed in its
fourth season, magnifying the significance of the
over-arching role of Bill Davis Racing and its High
Point-based Triad Racing Development (TRD) component.
With
TRD as primary supplier of the engines, chassis and bodies
for every full-time Toyota Tundra team, the manufacturer
has produced stunning results since the start of the 2006
campaign, led by the Toyota-branded flagship Tundras for
BDR drivers Mike Skinner (#5) and Johnny
Benson (#23).

The JBFC sends it's condolences to the Lesa France Kennedy
Family
Dr. Bruce Kennedy, husband of International Speedway Corp.
president Lesa France Kennedy, died Tuesday when the plane
he was piloting crashed. At least four other persons
were killed, including two children, Sanford Fire Chief
Gerard Ransom confirmed. The identities of the dead were
not released but NASCAR confirmed the identity of the
Daytona Beach plastic surgeon.
Ramsey Poston, NASCAR's managing
director of corporate communications, released the
following statement:
"This morning, at approximately 8:40 a.m.
Eastern Time, a Cessna 310 registered to Competitor Liaison
Bureau Inc. of Daytona Beach, crashed in a Sanford, Florida,
area neighborhood. At this time, we can confirm there were
two people on-board, including the pilot, Dr. Bruce Kennedy
and Michael Klemm, a senior captain with NASCAR Aviation.
Both were killed in the crash. "Dr. Kennedy was the
husband of NASCAR Board Member and ISC President Lesa France
Kennedy.
"It is clear that numerous families were
affected by this terrible tragedy and unfortunately several
people were deceased or seriously injured. Our deepest
sympathies and prayers are with all of those who were
involved in this tragic accident and their families. We will
provide additional information as it becomes available."
Kennedy was piloting the Cessna 310 when
it went down about 8:40 a.m. ET shortly after takeoff from
Daytona International Airport. At a briefing shortly before
11 a.m., the Seminole County Sheriff's office said the pilot
and co-pilot were both killed in the crash.
ISC issued the following statement from
executive vice president and COO John Saunders: "Our
thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved in the plane
crash that occurred this morning in Sanford, Florida. We are
deeply saddened by the loss of Dr. Bruce Kennedy, and others
that have been lost or injured in this tragic accident. We
ask that you respect the privacy of the Kennedy and France
families while they deal with this terrible loss." The
plane crashed into one house and the resulting fire ignited
another house next door. "It was an extremely intense
fire," said Matt Minnetto, a fire investigator with Sanford
Fire Department.
Competitor Liaison Bureau Inc. is based
in Daytona Beach and lists William C. France, the late
chairman of NASCAR, as its registered agent in online
records from the Department of State Division of
Corporations. James C. France also is listed as an officer
of the company.
The plane was traveling from Daytona
Beach to Lakeland when the pilot declared smoke in the
cockpit. The plane tried to land at the Orlando Sanford
International Airport when it crashed just north of the
airport, Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman
Kathleen Bergen said. Kennedy's death came just five
weeks after the June 4 death of Lesa France Kennedy's
father, Bill France Jr.
Testing in Iowa
Nine teams from the
Craftsman Truck Series were at the Iowa Speedway for
testing on Thursday for Toyota. Craftsman Truck
points leader Mike Skinner was at the Iowa Speedway.
Former Nextel Cup Series regular and Craftsman Truck
Series driver Johnny Benson was also in Newton as well
as Todd Bodine. Drivers said that the Iowa
Speedway reminds them of the Richmond International
Raceway. "You know, one of my favorite places ever was
Richmond, and they took that race away from us. So we
need to replace it with Iowa," Skinner said.
M-40 Update
Johnny unloaded his brand new late model on Tuesday in
Jones, Michigan for a testing session. With the
help of Russ Hoekwater, Jim Kurtz, Nick Fischer, Tom Moe
Jr., Ron Piechocki and Dave Zagiaski, the #10 late model
was tuned up in preparation for the big race.
Dark clouds loomed over the track for most of the early
afternoon on Wednesday. Once practice got
underway, the sun broke through. There were over
60 cars trying to qualify. Johnny's time was good
enough for 7th fastest.
There were 50 lap qualifying races scheduled. The
1st and 2nd qualifier had the option of sitting out the
50 lap races - but they would have to start 23rd and
24th. Johnny ran in the first 50
lap qualifying race and started in 14th. He put on
quite a show taking the high side to pass his
competitors and finish 2nd.
The inversion for the 100 lap race was dictated by the
roll of 6 dices. 19th was the magic inversion
number. For some reason, Johnny earned the
spotting start of 18th due to finishing 2nd in the
qualifying race.
The field was set to start 24 cars, but in the end they
started 28 cars. Quite a full field for the 3/8
mile, D shaped oval racing surface with 20-degree
banking in the turns. There
was a lot of banging and spin outs as the drivers tried
to position themselves. Johnny's night ended short
when he brought his Monte Carlo in the pits.

Gordon's Substitute Crew Chief does Just Fine
By: Pete Pistone
The JBFC would like to congratulate Jeff Meendering on a job
well done at New Hampshire! From sweeping the floors
to crew chief at Hendrick Motorsports. Jeff is
the son of the late Marv Meendering who was a well known
crew chief at Berlin Raceway. When Johnny was racing
at Berlin Raceway, Marv was wrenching on the cars for Bruce
Vanderlaan.
If Sunday's
performance at New Hampshire International Speedway is any
indication, missing your crew chief is no big deal in
today's Nextel Cup world.

With interim crew
chief Jeff Meendering filling in for Letarte,
Gordon's DuPont Chevrolet was stellar all weekend,
qualifying eighth before coming home second in Sunday's
300-mile race.
"I'm just so proud of this team to come
in here with that kind of pressure without Steve and a lot
of attention and they stepped up," said Gordon, who despite
the 100-point penalty incurred earlier in the week
maintained his series points lead by 156 over Hamlin. "Man,
it feels good."
Many speculated Meendering would have
input from Letarte in some way, whether on a cell phone or
instant messaging via the Internet. But Gordon said
the decision to let the new guy do his job was made early in
the week, and that Meendering was completely on his own to
call the race come Sunday. "You can only do so
much away from the racetrack," Gordon said. "You know,
sometimes that can get confusing. You know, you've got to
have confidence in the person that you put up there on that
box, and we have confidence in Jeff."
"Obviously, you know, Steve and him have been in quite a bit
of communication throughout the week talking about strategy,
talking about setups and everything leading into this
weekend. So I feel like he was well prepped, Jeff was. And I
think that we had enough guys up there helping him ... (all)
an additional person on the phone or texting would do is
complicate things a bit more."
The successful debut of Meendering has
Gordon confident about his team's fate over the next five
races as it continues on without Letarte, who since taking
the reigns of the No. 24 team nearly two years ago has
evolved into one of the most-respected crew chiefs on the
series. "He's been part of this team for a long time,"
Gordon said of Meendering. "Actions speak louder than words.
And going out there and getting in the heat of the battle,
that's what it's all about. That's, you know, when you have
got a race team like ours and race cars that we bring to the
track. I had confidence in him. I think he was nervous. I
didn't need to tell him anything else and make him any more
nervous."
Gordon felt that it wasn't just the
person who was on top of the pit box that needed to rise to
the occasion. "I think all of us. I did feel everybody took
on a little more responsibility and stepped up just a bit
and I think that's very normal when you lose your crew chief
or the leader of your team," Gordon said. "Then everybody
has to dig a little deeper and pay attention a little bit in
more detail, and I would say that, you know, I did do my
part. I didn't do anything more or anything less.
Johnny Finishes 7th in Memphis
The Craftsman Truck teams traveled to Memphis this
weekend. Johnny's qualifying time put him deep
into the field in the 24th position. Johnny made
his way through the field and also gained positions with
his pit stops. Travis Kvapil won the 200 lap
event.
During post-race inspection
following the NASCAR officials found issue with the
engine in race winner Travis Kvapil's No. 6 K&N Filters
Ford. The engine will be taken back to the NASCAR R&D
Center for further evaluation next week. The issue with
the engine was not disclosed.
Benson Gets Big Win as Truck
Series Tightens Up
By: John
Schwarb - Special to ESPN.COM
Add Johnny Benson to the
list of Craftsman Truck Series drivers making up for
lost time this month.
Defending champion Todd Bodine and 2003
champ Travis Kvapil finally broke into the win column at
Texas and Michigan, respectively, and last week Benson
joined the ranks with a second consecutive win at the
Milwaukee Mile.
Benson, second in points last year in a
five-win campaign for Bill Davis Racing, has spent much of
this season running at the front but with little to show for
it. He was second at Daytona by .031 of a second to Jack
Sprague, in the top five at Kansas, Mansfield and Dover and
in the top 10 in three other races.
There have also been three bottom finishes on his 2007
résumé, but in two of those races he was in second place
when disaster struck in the form of a blown tire at
Charlotte (with 13 laps remaining) and engine failure at
Texas.
"Those are the three races that put us
seventh in points," said Benson, 424 points behind BDR
teammate Mike Skinner. "But we've been running good. I would
rather be running in the lead and having a problem than
running 15th. Our performance has been there, it just hasn't
looked good on paper."
There were no such problems at Milwaukee,
as he led 96 laps, including the last 41. A late caution
required fending off restart king Ron Hornaday Jr., but
Benson's Toyota was up to the task.
"It was nice to finally get a win, for
sure, and to do it back-to-back at Milwaukee was cool," said
Benson, who also added a ninth-place finish in the Saturday
night Busch race driving J.J. Yeley's No. 1 Chevrolet.
Benson's team even helped Skinner
maintain his dominance. The points leader wasn't strong in
practice, but Benson was, so the teams compared notes.
Skinner then went out and grabbed his seventh pole of the
season.
He finished fourth in the race, maintaining a season-long
streak of top-10s.
"We talk a little bit, our driving styles
are a little different and we like different setups, but
there's times when we help each other," Benson said.
Had Benson not been so helpful in another
matter earlier in the season, he would be 50 points richer.
Last month he let unlicensed driver Mike Lichty behind the
wheel of the No. 23 during a test at Charlotte. Lichty
crashed, and NASCAR came down hard on Benson with a 50-point
penalty.
"I don't think the league treated me bad,
I was surprised at the points. I can't gain points back at a
test, so they shouldn't take them away at a test," Benson
said. "We can't complain for what they did, it was our
fault. For me, I'm helping a kid out, he's a good race car
driver, we probably just put him in a bad position, which in
return put us in a bad position.
"But you need to help people, that's what
propels people in this sport. We just went about it wrong."

Benson, Kvapil Lead NASCAR Truck Test At Martinsville
Speedway
By: Mike Smith
Johnny Benson spent Friday and Saturday nights racing at
the Milwaukee Mile, actually winning Friday night’s
NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race on the historic
track.
Monday morning, though, he was back in uniform at
another of NASCAR’s most historic tracks, Martinsville
Speedway. This time the veteran of NASCAR’s top
three series wasn’t racing for points or money, though.
He and fellow Craftsman Truck Series driver Travis
Kvapil were on hand at the historic half-mile helping
NASCAR work toward a more economic engine package for
the series.
"We’re just doing the engine test for NASCAR with a
couple different options they have going on," said
Benson, who had five wins in the truck series in 2006,
but scored his first of this season at Milwaukee.
Anytime NASCAR wants to do a test, I’m more than happy
to be involved with it. I’m glad they appreciate the
work we do and the input we give them so they can make
the decisions they need to make to keep the series
growing."
NASCAR is in the early stages of taking a look at a more
economic engine package for the series that would keep
smaller teams on more equal footing with larger,
well-heeled teams. "I think this is important. If
they can cut costs, and they probably need to, it’s
something we need to look at. The big teams will always
be here, but we have to help the little guy."
Friday’s win in his Bill Davis’ Toyota was a big boost
for Benson and his team. "We’ve been running
pretty good all year, but we’ve just had some odd things
happen. We’ve been quick almost every track and some of
the places we had failures, we were running in the top
five," said Benson, who finished second in a NEXTEL Cup
race at Martinsville in the 1990s and has several top
five runs here in the Truck Series. It’s been up
and down for us here at Martinsville. We had some good
runs. It’s a neat track with a lot of great history. The
fans enjoy it … it’s bumper-tag racing a lot of the
time."
Even with a long, busy weekend, Benson said he didn’t
mind not having Monday off. "It’s what we do, so
it’s alright. We work on these days anyway, so it’s
better to be at the track driving a race truck than
sitting in the house doing that type of work. So it’s a
good
day for us.
