How did you get involved in Racing?
My dad was an auto mechanic on a car at the Speedroome
in Grand Rapids. Once that track closed, I moved
over to Berlin. Did not start working on a team
until several years ago. I had no desire to make
racing a career - just a big race fan.
How did you get involved with the Benson's?
I watched John Sr. for many years. In the late
80's I stopped by his garage to visit. It lead to a
friendship that has lasted for many years and transformed
into working on Johnny's late model at Berlin Raceway.
I have only worked on his team. I enjoy working with
Johnny - he is very informative and willing to teach you
things.
Race Day Duties:
General Help - Assistant Crew Chief when things are going
wrong -ha!
Best Moment in Racing
with John Sr.:
Watching him win his seven track championships
Worst Moment in Racing with John Sr.:
Watching his throttle stick going into the third turn and
him landing upside down
Best Moment in Racing
with Johnny:
On the late model circuit - being on the winning team when
Johnny won the Chet Memorial. When Johnny raced came
back to Berlin to run an ASA race, I made the television
broadcast cheering in the background. That made my day!
Hobbies / What do you do in your spare time? I'm
retired. I love to go camping in my motorhome
with my wife Barb. When Johnny was in the Cup
series, I helped Russ Hoekwater drive his motor coach to
Phoenix for several years. |
