DeVos, Sweeney, Lake,
Stormzand, Martin win
in 5-in-1 show;
Benson comes from behind but runs out of time
Berlin Raceway
packed in the fans and packed in the races Saturday night
for its 55th anniversary celebration presented by Holland
Motor Homes. All four weekly divisions plus the Vintage
Modified cars of the Vintage Racing Organization of America
made it a 5-in-1 show, and the night was capped off by a
spectacular fireworks show in celebration of the historic
half-mile oval track.
In the entry-level Standale Interiors Sportsman
25-lap feature, #97 Andy Stormzand led the first nine laps
before #44 Brian Van Zalen passed for the top position.
Several quick yellow flags slowed the race through the
middle laps, including spins by #52 Nick Sherrington on lap
13, #6 Terry Bockheim and #59 John Evans on lap 17 and
Bockheim again floating off the backstretch on lap 20. #2
Shawn Simon was on the move late in the race, passing on the
outside all the way up to third position. While Simon
battled #13 Brad Haney side by side for that position,
leader Van Zalen took advantage and ran up almost a
straightaway lead. On the lap 23 restart, Stormzand made a
great move around Van Zalen for the lead again. Then Haney
ducked inside Van Zalen in turn 4. The two cars were racing
hard for second position when Van Zalen’s rear end locked up
and the two cars crashed on the frontstretch, collecting #52
Nick Sherrington in the wreck. Stormzand, a 39-year-old from
Lowll who raced part time at Berlin in the early 90’s and is
racing his first season since 1995, held on for the last two
green flag laps to win his first career checkered flag,
ahead of Simon, #33 Allen Davis, #15 Mat McClarren and #9
Jeff Sterken.
Just one caution slowed the pace in the Standale Lumber
Pro Stock 30-lap feature, when on lap 16 #15 Casey
Berenbrock and #44 Brian Van Zalen scraped the turn 3 wall.
#7x Nick Gebben led the first half of the race by a
comfortable margin, but #55 Dave Lake reeled the leader back
in and made the pass for the lead on lap 27. Lake, of Howard
City, held on for his fifth victory of the season ahead of
Gebben, #77x Andrew Nylaan, #71 Kyle Ballard and #23 Chris
Koslek.
Veteran Kentwood driver #88 Tim Sweeney led wire-to-wire in
the Engine Pro Super Stock feature, leading through
three solo spins for cautions and 35 green-flag laps of
racing to claim his third feature win of the season. Points
leader #1 Brian Wiersma finished second, followed by #98 Bob
Bliss, #3 Ross Eppink and #5 Jack Drolema Jr.
In the 55-lap Coors Light Late Model feature, #27
Billy Shotko jumped out to an early lead through 11 laps
until #12 Tim DeVos powered his way into the lead. A great
battle for second between the four cars of Shotko, #21 Terry
Van Haitsma, #57 Alan Marcott and #82 Tom Thomas ensued, as
the cars crowded together two-by-two for the position. Van
Haitsma went low and was just about
to clear Shotko and the pack when Marcott
stuck his nose between Van Haitsma and Shotko to make it
three wide. Shotko couldn’t hold on up high and spun into
the turn 4 wall to bring out caution on lap 25. Meanwhile,
the #10 car of Johnny Benson, racing for the third of four
times at Berlin this season as his NASCAR Craftsman Truck
schedule allows, started 25th and raced his way up to 17th
by lap 25. Benson kicked it into high gear and advanced to
9th in the next 10 laps, as DeVos still led by a comfortable
margin. The second-place battle had settled, with Van
Haitsma in the position trailed by Marcot and Thomas. But on
lap 48, as Van Haitsma was gaining ground on the leader, he
came upon the lapped car of Shotko, who he’d been dueling
with earlier in the race. Shotko got into Van Haitsma,
spinning him off the backstretch and out of contention for
the win. Shotko was sent to the back of the field for rough
driving, along with Van Haitsma, who was forced to the rear
for spinning to bring out the caution. Benson jumped into
the top 5 on that lap, then mowed down #37 Terry Senneker
for fourth on lap 54 and Marcott on the final lap. Benson
almost put away Thomas but ran out of room on that final
lap, although he did claim the Hard Charger award for
advancing the most positions throughout the race. DeVos won
for the second time this season to retain his points lead,
followed by Thomas, Benson, Marcott and Senneker.
In the Vintage Racing Organization of America’s
20-lap feature, #86 Bob Martin came from the back to win
ahead of #76 Tim Martin, #3 Lou Caposey, #57 Tom Boorsma and
#82 Rob Parker. VROA is a racing series based in West
Michigan and Northern Indiana that celebrates the
preservation of a form of circle track racing popular in the
1940’s-1960’s, known as modified racing. The organization
features open-wheel cars built with pre-1948 steel bodies
made in North America.
Berlin Raceway is back in action next Saturday, August 6,
for a weekly race including all four divisions presented by

The Inside Scoop -
Memphis
By BDRCrewGuy
Hey Everyone - I figured
I could add a little bit to what happened last night. By now
you all know that we had a flat tire. But what may not have
been on TV was when the tire went flat, it broke the Right
Front shock. We came in and changed the tire and JB went
back out. However, he said something still didn't feel
right. So we came back in and saw the Right Front shock was
broken. I think it was the next caution, we came back in and
took it off and were going to replace it. However, a bolt or
something was broke so we couldn't put a new one on right
then. Since we didn't have much time and didn't want lose a
lap changing it, we had to send JB back out with no Right
Front shock. We actually had to race a little bit without it
and JB even passed a few trucks. Not bad for having no Right
Front shock! Then on the next caution, were able to come in
and replace it.
It wasn't a bad night considering we cut a tire and had to
change a shock and still finished on the lead lap. Greg was
really happy because none of us gave up and we still managed
a decent finish even though we had a few problems. As
always, JB did a great job and at times was running as fast
as the leaders. It was just really hard to pass so we never
could get closer to the front. On a side note, it was
probably one of the hottest races I can remember in a long
time so we were all happy when it was over!

Truck series racers enjoy spin around dirt
track
By Craig
Wack
The last time NASCAR Craftsman
Truck Series driver Johnny Benson raced on dirt, Ronald
Reagan was President, punk rock was in its heyday and
Richard Petty was the King of NASCAR.
"I ran dirt back in 1982,
or something like that," Benson said following a special
10-lap match race of NCTS drivers Friday night at the
Memphis Motorsports Park dirt track. "These cars are like
nothing I've ever run before. I used to run the late
models, but nothing with this kind of technology. Even
though these are the modified cars, they're pretty
impressive, pretty cool.
Benson finished second to
David Reutimann in the race, but the smile on his face
betrayed any disappointment he may have had.
"This is the first time I've driven (a modified on dirt).
It was cool," Benson said. "I'd like to thank Dean
Caldwell and his whole family for letting me run their
car. It was a pleasure to meet his wife and his two kids.
I had a ball. It was about as much fun as you can have."

Joey
Miller Dominates
Berlin

ARCA RE/MAX Series rookie Joey Miller
took the boys to school Saturday night
at Berlin Raceway.
The Farmington, Minnesota driver, after
winning the Pork Pole award, dominated
the Request/Sara Lee 200 by GFS
Marketplace leading 162 of 202 laps en
route to his second series triumph.
While the racing was extremely intense
in his mirror, Miller’s Country Joe
Homes-Eagle Creek Aviation Dodge was on
a rail from the start.
“To win at this racetrack really means
a lot,” said Miller. “Because so many
good drivers have won here. It’s a
really cool place. As good as this car
was tonight, if we would have come
away with anything less than a win, it
would have been a major
disappointment.”
Two-time USAC national sprint car
champion Brian Tyler, in only his
second series start, challenged
occasionally in traffic and finished
three lengths back in second.
“In traffic we might have been
better,” said Tyler. “We caught him
(Miller) a couple times, but in the
open, we had nothing for him. I’m
looking for experience and seat-time,
so I’m pretty happy.”
The race for third brought back
memories for many and the fans to
their feet when series champions’ Tim
Steele and Frank Kimmel banged doors
on the final lap. Steele, in the HS
Die-Visi Cad Cam Ford, beat Kimmel to
the stripe by inches to claim the
third position.
Kimmel, in the Advance Auto Parts-Pork
Ford, was fourth after making several
unscheduled pit stops for handling
issues. Holt, Michigan driver Gary
Sherman, in the Dave Hausbeck Trucking
Chevrolet, finished fifth
Miller, who made only one pit stop
for four tires and fuel, led at the
onset and immediately pulled away
from the pack. Miller led up through
lap 74 before handing the top-spot
off to Jason Jarrett while the
eventual winner pitted. Jarrett led
the next 18 laps before he too
pitted putting Chad Blount, who
already pitted twice for
adjustments, into the lead. Blount
managed to lead 13 laps before Tyler
took control just past the halfway
point. But by then, Miller had
picked his way back through the pack
and passed Tyler, who led nine laps,
to take control for good.
A late-race caution near the end,
one of 14 throughout for the typical
short-track beating and banging,
prompted series officials to extend
the race two more laps to procure a
mandatory green-flag finish.
David Ragan, in his first Berlin
attempt, finished sixth in the 31-W
Insulation Pontiac. Blount, who was
penalized for rough driving late in
the race, charged back to finish
seventh in the Foretravel Motorhomes
Chevrolet. Blount also received the
Weld Wheels Halfway Leader award.
West Olive, Michigan driver Billy
Shotko finished eighth over Brian
Keselowski, who steered the Dusty’s
Collision Dodge to the finish in
ninth. Rookie Brett Hudson finished
10th in the Hudson
Machine Chevrolet.
Miller also earned the
ReadyHosting.com Lap Leader award.
His crew chief Mike Chaffee picked
up the SK Hand Tool Crew Chief of
the Race honors. Ron Cox, who
started 28th and finished 12th, won
the Hoosier Tire Hard Charger award
for advancing the most positions.
