On Vacation
I will be on vacation
without internet access from February 24 - March 3rd, so
this website will not be updated with Johnny's activities
from California until I return. The JB fans on the
message board will keep you updated on activities from the
practice session, qualifying and race results - or you can
find out the truck information on nascar.com or

Trucks Increased Viewership with Daytona Race
SPEED Channel's live coverage of the NASCAR Craftsman Truck
Series race on Friday night from Daytona International
Speedway scored a Nielsen Rating of 2.1 (1,330,000
households), the highest rating for any program in network
history. "We're obviously very excited to start our
2005 NASCAR season like this," said SPEED Channel President
Jim Liberatore. "SPEED enjoyed a strong offseason in the
ratings and a lot of us had an expectation that this could
be a breakout year for the network.
"Of course, when you have a race where two teams are both
convinced they belong in Victory Lane until 15 minutes after
the event is over, you know you had a great race with a
memorable finish. That's the kind of close, exciting racing
the NASCAR Craftsman truck series brought to the network
when we started broadcasting it three years ago." The
rating for the Florida Dodge Dealers 250 was up 31 percent
over 2004 (1.6).
Now in its 10th year on the air, SPEED Channel brings
viewers live, exclusive coverage of the entire NASCAR
Craftsman Truck Series schedule. The next race will be
Friday at 9 p.m. ET from Fontana, California. Other
live racing from Daytona on SPEED Channel also earned strong
ratings, with the ARCA
RE/MAX event scoring a 1.11 (701,000
households) on Feb. 12 and the Crown Royal IROC race getting
a 1.47 (932,000 households) on Feb. 18.

Johnny's Quote After Daytona
Johnny Benson, No. 23
Toyota: “My truck wasn’t too bad all night. We had a few
hiccups here and there, but we tried to stay out of trouble
all night. We got up front and led for a little bit, but
then it got crazy and we backed off some. The only real mess
we got in was after the white flag when everyone was going
for the win. We were sitting in sixth-place or eight-place
and got caught up in all that. This was my first truck race
at Daytona and it was a pretty cool deal. At times you’re
running up front in a four truck draft -- pulling away --
and you feel like a hero -- and next thing you know there
pulling by us like we’re standing still.”
A Fan's Perspective - Daytona
By: Paulette and Klaus Price
You missed one heck of a race!
Johnny had to start at the back because they changed
engines. It was kind of frustrating, because the trucks he
was running with strung out prior to the first green flag
and he (and some of them) had to play catch up for much of
the first half. The action started with Rick Crawford's flip
and slide. The crowd cheered when he drove it into his pit
stall.
Chad Chaffin flipped too and was at least a 9.6. He drove
his to the garage. Amazing.
Johnny got booted by Steve Park as he slowed for a wreck in
front of him. Then later, he lost part of his left rear
panel when he got nailed again. With that one, they had to
replace his battery. Then with 9 laps to go he and Greg
decided they would freshen up their tires. They had four
with 10 laps on them and Johnny thought he could do some
good with them in the last laps.
As it would happen, the race went green, white, checkered.
Just as the field took the white flag, Johnny's big one
occurred. Right in front of us. His spotter Rocky said "They
got him, they got him." Greg asked him if he was all right
and Johnny came back that he was and "did the white flag
come out?" Greg told him it had and he needed to get back to
the finish line and Johnny drove the late Miccosukee #23
Toyota back and parked it on pit road just past the finish
line. How he did that we don't know because the damage to
the front of the truck was major. Johnny got out, looked at
the truck and headed off- probably to the care center.
These guys earned this one the hard way. Congratulations to
our "never give up Johnny", Greg, Rocky, John Sr., who
spotted on the back stretch, and the whole #23 team!!
Oh. And how often do you have two drivers in Winners Circle.
(Only one got out of his truck.)
Johnny Finishes 10th at
Daytona
By: Charles Krall - Trackside Editor
Jimmy Spencer drove to
victory lane, but when the trophy was passed out, it was
Bobby Hamilton that was declared the victor in a wild
Florida Dodge Dealers 250 at Daytona International Speedway.
Spencer appeared to initially be leading when the caution
flag came out for a multi-truck accident just as the field
took the white flag, but a television review sent Hamilton’s
team to victory lane instead. Hamilton becomes the first
driver in the Truck Series’ ten-year history to win from the
last starting position.
Hamilton started the race from the 36th position after
taking the past champion’s provisional after qualifying, and
often ran five or more seconds behind the lead pack in the
early stages of the race. Following a caution with 20 laps
to go, Hamilton made the charge from the back of the lead
pack to run with the leaders, and moved side-by-side with
Spencer as the accident broke out behind them.
“I love this track and we have faith in NASCAR to make the
right decisions,” Hamilton said. “When the lights came on I
was in front and they told us to hang tight and be patient,
and it worked out. We did 1,100 miles of testing and went
through nine sets of tires working on race runs. That is
what put us in victory lane here tonight. We didn’t need to
burn our tires off in practice here.”
The night was punctuated by several spectacular crashes.
Rick Crawford was spun out of third position at lap 10, and
as he slid backwards toward the tri-oval grass it caught air
and bounced on to his roof. The truck flipped back on to its
wheels and slid through the grass, and once it came to a
stop Crawford fired it up and drove it back to his pit
stall.
The Big One
erupted just as the field was coming to the halfway point
when Kerry Earnhardt got sucked around in traffic and
collected several other trucks. Ron Hornaday, Chase
Montgomery, Shige Hattori, Brandon Whitt and Todd Kluever
were caught up in this accident and sent behind the wall for
repairs. Matt Crafton spun through the grass but was able to
continue.
After a round of green flag pit stops was interrupted by
Mike Harmon’s spin off turn four, several drivers found
themselves trapped a lap down and raced in and among the
leaders to get back on the leader’s lap. On lap 61, Brendan
Gaughan was fighting for his lap when he got loose
underneath leader Mike Skinner and keyed a four-truck crash
coming off turn four. Also involved was Bill Lester and
Johnny Benson.
With 10 laps remaining, Chad Chaffin got bumped by Dennis
Setzer and spun through the grass on the backstretch.
Chaffin also caught air and did a spectacular flip through
the air and landed on his wheels. He too cranked the engine
and drove it to the garage. Also caught up was Terry Cook,
whose five-race top-10 finish streak came to an end when he
was eliminated.
The final smash-up of the day happened as the field passed
under the white flag. Matt Crafton got loose underneath a
three-wide battle for fourth and came back into traffic. He
made hard contact with David Reutimann who then caught up
Jack Sprague and several others. Crafton slide across the
track and pounded the inside wall as David Starr, Johnny
Benson, Casey Atwood, and Robert Pressley were caught up.
Spencer was credited with second, as Todd Bodine, Ricky
Craven, and Ted Musgrave rounded out the top-5. Spencer
fought back from a pass-through penalty for passing below
the yellow line and Musgave recovered from a flat right
front tire
with less than 25
laps remaining.
Ken Weaver finished sixth, followed by Brad Keselowski,
David Starr, Wayne Edwards, and Johnny Benson in tenth.
Starr and Benson both crossed the line with severely damaged
trucks after being caught up in the last-lap crash.
Qualifying Quote
Johnny Benson, No. 23
Toyota: “You always hope you can run a little better, but
that’s about what we’ve run in practice. The Tundra ran the
same tonight as it did this morning. I’m glad we qualified
and now we can go racing.”
(TruckSeries.com

Daytona Qualifying
With the new qualifying procedures in place, the two laps
that Johnny would take around Daytona would be just as
important as finishing the race. It did not matter
that Bill Davis Racing Team #23 ranked 19th in 2004 owners
points or that Johnny ranked 25th in 2004 drivers points.
They did not attempt to qualify for all races and will have
to qualify their way in the first four events of 2005.
After replacing an engine after Thursday morning practice,
the #23 team was hopeful that Johnny would find the speed
necessary to lock him into one of the six valuable
positions. Johnny did just that! His time of
50.053 placed him in the 17th position - earning him a spot
to start in the race. Kerry Earnhardt earned the pole
with a time of 49.321. Good job to Johnny and the #23
Bill Davis Racing Team sponsored by Miccosukee Resorts!

Thursday
- 2nd Practice Session
It was an early morning practice session for the Craftsman
Truck Series. The were on the track from 9:00 - 9:50
am. Johnny's speed around the Daytona International
Speedway improved with a time of 47.391 placing him 4th
fastest. Bill Lester was on top with a time of 47.258.
(02-17-05)
Wednesday - 1st
Practice Session
The Craftsman Trucks
hit the Daytona track at 3:00 pm today. Tires continue
to be a concern from the weekend CUP activities. The
Truck Series normally has a limit of four sets of tires per
race event. However, NASCAR has allowed an additional
set to be used during the race only. Once the teams have
completed qualifying on Thursday and are impounded, NASCAR
will release a fifth set to the teams. Many teams are
planning on scuffing all of their tires for use in the race,
although since the trucks will be impounded after
qualifying, the added fifth set will be sticker tires when
they are bolted on.
Johnny struggled throughout the practice session. His
#23 Toyota Tundra was loose, loose, loose. His time of
48.501 placed him 29th of 41 trucks who practiced today.
Greg Ely and the crew will make every effort to get the
Truck comfortable for Johnny to drive around the 2.5 mile
track. (02-16-05)

Sprague, Benson Ready to Ride Trucks
By: Steve Kaminski - The Grand
Rapids Press
Johnny Benson Jr. and Jack Sprague raced down different
paths to stock car racing fame. Sprague left
Spring Lake in the late 1980s and built his career in the
sport's hub, North Carolina. Benson, of Grand Rapids, won a
Berlin Raceway Late Model championship in 1989, joined the
American Speed Association and steadily progressed through
the ranks. While Sprague and Benson have taken different
roads, they have reached the same destination this season
now that they both will be competing in the NASCAR Craftsman
Truck Series.
The 2005 season opens with
Friday's Florida Dodge Dealers 250 at Daytona International
Speedway. Qualifying is today.
Sprague, a three-time
Craftsman Truck champion, will return for his second full
season in the No. 16 XpressMotorsports Chevrolet Chevy
Truck. He will be joined in the Chevy camp by Ron Hornaday,
an old Sprague rival. "The 2004 season set a solid
foundation for this Chevy Trucks team," said Sprague, who
finished seventh in last year's point standings. "As the
season wound down, we learned a great deal and felt like we
built some great momentum for this year."
Benson, the 1995 NASCAR Busch
champion and an eight-year veteran of the NASCAR Winston Cup
circuit, is poised for his first full season in Craftsman
Trucks. Benson opened the 2004 season in Busch but split
with car owner James Finch after 11 races. He then landed a
ride in a Bill Davis Racing Toyota and ran the second half
of the truck season.
Benson competed in just 13 of
the 25 races, but he managed to finish 25th in the point
standings. He recorded eight top-10s and five top-fives,
including a second place at Texas Motor Speedway in October.
Benson joins a Bill Davis team that also features drivers
Mike Skinner and Bill Lester. This weekend's
race will mark his first try at Daytona in a truck.
"You do not lose the draft as
quickly and can regain positions quicker than in a Nextel
Cup car," Benson said. "I can take more chances knowing that
I can still regain positions." Both drivers will
be looking to pick up the pace when the green flag drops on
qualifying today at 6:30 p.m. Sprague was 25th overall in
Wednesday's practice with a run of 186.081 mph. Benson
clocked in 29th overall in 185.563.
This marks the 10-year anniversary of the
Craftsman Trucks circuit, and Daytona is the first of 25
races. The circuit will visit Michigan International
Speedway on June 18 for the Michigan 200.

A JB Fan Meets Chris Economaki
Just thought I would share
this story with you. Back about a year ago, at our
local dirt track (Nodak speedway), they celebrated their
50th year of racing. For the event they brought in a
special guest and he did some talking and commentary in the
booth with the guys up there. After the races, as we
were leaving, we saw the track manager and the special guest
talking. I kinda know the manger, so I stopped and said hi
to him and the guest. The guest commented on my shirt
I was wearing. (JB's late model T-shirt). He
said he had done many stories about Johnny's dad and watched
him race. He also made the comment that there was 3
states he had never been to, North Dakota, Montana, and
Idaho. Now there is only two. What an amazing
man! He sure has a lot of stories to tell. The
guest of course was Chris Economacki. After reading
your story on your website about being a huge Sr. fan,
I understand the comment about my shirt I was wearing.
Kris Hemstad from North Dakota.
Kris - Thanks for sharing your story!

Congratulations - Chris Economacki
Longtime motorsports
journalist Chris Economacki recently was honored during the
32nd RPM Promoters Workshops Series in Lake Mary, Fla.
Florida state senator Bill Posey presented Economacki, the
Publisher Emeritus, National Speed Sport News, with a
certificate proclaiming “Chris Economacki Day” in Florida on
Sunday, Feb. 20 – the same day of the 47th annual Daytona
500. (Note:
Chris is a big fan of racing from all series - but is a huge
fan of John Benson Sr and his supermodified days.

Victory Junction Gang Camp

Anyone who has watched the NASCAR races has had a
opportunity to see the commercials for the Victory Junction
camp with Kenny Schrader, Bobby Labonte, Jeff Green, Dale
Earnhardt Jr., Tony Stewart and others. Last year
before the Darlington truck race, I extended my race weekend
to include a stop to the Victory Junction Gang Camp.
It was an eye opening experience and a breathtaking
facility.
The Victory Junction Gang
fulfills a wish of Adam Petty to open a camp for children
with life-threatening illnesses. Unfortunately Adam
never got to see his dream evolve, as his life ended
tragically in a practice racing accident in 2000. Kyle
and Patty Petty moved forward with Adam's project.
The camp is open to visitors and they have organized tours
for fans to see this project up close and personal. If
you are looking for a charity to be involved with, please
check them out. You can be a volunteer for a camp
counselor or even administrative help. You
would be making a difference. For photos of my tour -

Winning at Daytona
“Winning is special
anytime and I have been able to do that in almost every
division I have ever run,” said Johnny Benson, who will
pilot the No. 23 Toyota out of the Bill Davis stable in this
year’s Daytona NCTS event. “I haven’t won at Daytona yet and
to do that would be very special. Whatever type of vehicle
you are in – Trucks, Busch, Cup, Road Racing – it doesn’t
matter. Daytona is a very special place. It would be my
first win there and my team owner, Bill Davis, has won the
Daytona 500. It would be an honor for myself and my race
team to win at Daytona. It would be pretty cool for Toyota
to win there too. To do that would be pretty awesome.”

Steve Rose - Photographer
The JBFC sends out our thoughts and prayers to Steve Rose.
Steve is a NASCAR photographer and a good friend to Johnny
and the entire Benson Family and allowed the JBFC to use his
photos for your enjoyment.
During the ARCA race,
driver Blake Feese
overshot his pit stall and slammed into the wall opposite an
opening to the garage, where several photographers were
working. Speedway officials said Steve Rose was
taken to Halifax for treatment. Rose apparently suffered leg
injuries.
(02-13-05)
Update:
Johnny had an opportunity to speak with Steve Rose - he
has been released from the hospital and is doing well.

Big Names Make Trucks Better
Draw Than Ever
For years, the Craftsman Truck Series was
plagued by a lack of identifiable names. The racing was
good, sure, but there was no Dale Earnhardt on the bill, no
personality dynamic enough to turn librarians into screaming
loons.
And while there's still no
Dale Earnhardt on the bill, the guys he raced against are.
The series roster reads like the starting lineup from the
Coke 600, circa 1995: Bobby Hamilton. Ted Musgrave.
Jimmy Spencer. Ricky Craven. Johnny Benson. Todd
Bodine. And then there's his former Richard Childress Racing
teammate, Mike Skinner.
In all, no less than 12
former Cup Series drivers are represented on the 2005 series
roster, not including the one-off deals Jamie McMurray,
Kevin Harvick, Tony Stewart and Ken Schrader will
undoubtedly run.
Some point to the wealth of
former Cup talent as proof that the Truck Series is for
has-beens, a safe haven where those past their prime can
flame out gracefully. That's ridiculous. Tell that to
Spencer or Ron Hornaday. These guys are in the Truck Series
for one reason: marketing strategy.
Cup Series sponsors seek
youthful attractiveness over veteran experience these days,
leaving many former Cup drivers to duke it out in the Truck
ranks. That has created awareness, not to mention parity
There were 13 different
winners during the 2004 season, same as the Nextel Cup
Series. This year promises much the same, as five more
former Cup guys join the fray. And to think, Mark
Martin shows up next year.
Martin presents a new
situation for the Truck Series. Here's a guy who's had
enough of the demands outside the cockpit, so he's chosen to
make 2005 his last full-time season in the Cup Series. Come
next February, he'll race whatever he wants, whenever he
wants, wherever he wants. He's said the Truck Series
is on that docket. As sponsorship requirements continue to
mount, more Cup Series veterans will follow suit.
But the Truck Series can't
offer Cup Series money. Salaries are lower and winnings
aren't even in the same stratosphere. Kasey Kahne won more
than $350,000 for finishing second to Elliott Sadler at
Texas last year. He won back-to-back races in the
Truck Series and won slightly more than 80 grand.
Television ratings are low, too, so it's not all peaches and
cream. But it doesn't have to be. Sure, a 3.5 overnight
rating would be nice, but it's not vital. That stuff is for
the Cup Series to worry about.
The Craftsman Truck
Series just has to be what it is -- the most competitive
series NASCAR has to offer. If they keep producing the
product they're currently producing, the rest will take care
of itself. And a lineup of 12 former Cup guys doesn't
hurt, either. (Marty Smith -
NASCAR.com 02-10-05)

Speed Channel says it will kick off its third
